Hi All. Do not post here often, but I am wondering if anyone can offer some additional (any) experience/insight into corneal ulcers in boxers.
We have a great boxer mix who has had 3 bouts of corneal ulcers in the past 2 years requiring surgery/treatment. Her vets are fantastic and the treatment works (some kind of cross scratching of the eye with follow up adequan and antibiotic drops).
Anyhow, the vets believe her recurrences are due to self infliction (most likely scratching her eyes/ears as a result of her allergies.) She can no longer due anything steroid as she has had both back knees replaced (TPLO) and steroids may cause internal deterioration.
Her current anti-hystemine (sp) prescribed is hydroxyzine pamoate (50 mg 3X day); and ear drops as needed
QUESTION: Does anyone have any alternative eye protection that includes more freedom of movement? We continue to wear the E-collar to protect her from scratching the eyes, but this cannot go on despite her ease of adaption to it. She is quite the Houdini and has escaped the E-collar, so we are having trouble finding the right protection. Keep in mind, this E-collar never slows her down at all...and she does get out of it when we are around and can closely supervise daily.
Thanks for your consideration..Jen |
