Post subject: NC Adoption Update

I know I posted on this subject already but I just wanted to post on this since its still eating away at me that someone would do this to another

four weeks ago (today, long story shortened) I applied at Forever Home Rehabilitation Center in NC to adopt a border collie from them they responded to me saying that they would be interested in adopting the dog to me and will call me the next day, and only not to hear from them for four weeks, ignored my emails, posts and phone calls. I wanted to believe that they were just busy to get back to me but following them on facebook they respond to other posts they get from people whether its inquiring about a dog for adoption or just responding to someone's post whos just unable to adopt one of their dogs
its really upsetting that that one animal lover would do this to another. Its one thing to tell me they'll adopt the dog to me then change their mind for whatever reason, but no explanation no closure what so ever, NOTHING?
I've been lightly persistent, but I have not been rude in any of my emails or posts, I have been nothing but honest, I told them about me about my knowledge of dogs, breeds, nutrition, products, my experience and knowledge with border collies, dog behavior, bc behavior,
and because it is long distance adoption (Im NJ, total distance from me to shelter 7 hrs 40 min), I was willing to comply with anything they needed, pics of my home, neighborhood, willing to drive there personally to meet the dog and bring him home, bring him back if things didnt work out. Even as someone suggested here, have rescues/volunteers step in on my behave and perform home inspections and help accommodate them in anyway necessary, some already volunteered to help.

If they really didnt want to adopt to me, they could of told me instead of leaving me hanging like this, its not like they dont do out of state adoptions, according to a facebook post i found on their page someone adopted from them right here in jersey, coincidentally in a town less then 15 minutes from me .

If anyone has ever dealt with them at all and can give me some sort of explanation is to why they would do this or if anyone else wants to weigh in please do, im baffled at why such a high rated rescue would do something so unprofessional.

I had posted to you on the other thread. Now reading this one here is my take.

I believe there is a higher than likely chance that you and the other NJ person in a sense became one in the same due to confusion at the rescue.
I can picture the rescue saying "the girl from NJ"....

It would be rare for this rescue to have two people from the same state wanting the same dog. I don't think they intended to slight you at all, I think it was a mix up, a mistake.

I have no first hand knowledge of this but do have first hand knowledge of rescues and shelters confusing which people want which dogs. Even one rescue helping another it can become confusing.

This theory is a total guess on my part. But when I read your post, it was one of those light bulb moments...

Its a good point, but I don't think that's the case only because the post I saw by someone in nj was quite old and it was a picture of a dog he adopted.

Sorry to hear you didn't get him. Have you found another dog to adopt? I sure hope so!

Actually, I did come across a craigslist posting for a dog in VA for adoption through a private owner, and the dog's picture and description was much like Connor's so I'm going to see if they will adopt her to me even though I'm far away. I do have to figure out transportation now with this issue with hurricane sandy power has been out in a lot of areas and getting gas is very tough, but ill find a way, I always do!

I'm sorry you have not been able to adopt the dog you wanted. Maybe whoever told you that they would call the next isn't with the rescue anymore ("they responded to me saying that they would be interested in adopting the dog to me and will call me the next day"). No actual adoption agreement so I think something got mixed up to. Hope you find the dog you want. I don't think too much of Craigslist ... have you checked local shelters and rescues? Good luck to you.

Hi Steph, was going to comment before but Buter said it so much better than me when she advised reaching out to a local rescue. Buter gave you great advice again. I don't think anyone meant to slight you. Rescue is not a business. We are usually a mish mash of volunteers doing the best we can to save lives. I volunteer for a NJ group. If you would like to contact us maybe we can help by doing the home visit or vouching for you (once we check you out Smile )
Don't take it too personally. A group two hours away from me would not consider my application for one of their huskies because I was "out of their area". The funny thing is that I'm fairly well known for rescuing huskies and have been in rescue for over 40 years.

The adivce Buter was the best advice I got yet, I talk to some local rescue who come to my job and an animal control officer who used to work with me and they all volunteered to do a background check on me incase the NC rescue wanted.

I get that rescue are not a business and I know that email I received from them is no adoption process, but it still doesn't excuse what they did. It is very inconsistent with that rescues claim to stand for and that is to give pets a permanent loving home. If they couldn't take the time to see whether or not I am a good match for their dog they're trying to adopt out shows me that they're not looking at the best interest of the pets but of themselves. That is not just unfair to me its unfair to the dog because now he just lost out on having a home with a single family to give him one on one attention rather then sharing a home with almost 30 dogs and two volunteers.
Its the same with that husky rescue won't consider someone with so much experience
With the breed. its a shame to turn someone like you away in hopes that they will find the perfect home who reach all their expectations that may or may not exist. Again, not thinking in the best interest of their dogs. Its just a shame because its the dogs that are the real victims.

It just seems like the adoption system is messed up and its not just me a lot of perfectly legitimate animal lovers are being denied adoption of a pet for silly reasons and this is hurting rescues because people end up buying pets because they don't want to deal with the hassle. I brought this topic up on another website and I was surprised at how many people went through the same trouble
