Post subject: RIP Sweet Dexter Boy

I wanted to let all of my PF friends and family know that I had to put Dexter down on Thursday. I took him to the emergency vet because he kept collapsing every foot or so that he would walk. He had been just fine the night before, being his typical playful self. We got to the vet and found out he had severe internal bleeding due to a large tumor that we did not know about. The options were emergency surgery, to remove the tumor and his spleen, and IF he made it through the surgery we may get 1-5 months with him, but the aggressive form of cancer that he had, he would be in extreme pain the remainder of his life...We had to make the most difficult choice to put our baby boy down. I know all of you have know this horrible pain all too often. I know Dexter was much loved here at PF and wanted to let you all know. Run free at the rainbow bridge my sweet baby boy...Mama loved you with all of my heart. Thank you for showing me what true love was...I miss you sooo much Sad

my last pic with my baby boy

and of course the most memorable pic of my baby

I'm so sorry that you lost Dexter.

My GSD, Midhir, collapsed from a similar tumor on his spleen a year ago. He had surgery and we learned that the tumor was Hemangiosarcoma. I did everything I could to prolong his life, but only gained 44 days.

The only "good" thing about Hemangosarcoma is that the dog has a very normal life and feels fine until there is a major bleed. And, from what I saw, there is no pain.

Still, it's a shock because the dog seems perfectly okay and suddenly collapses. It's a very scary thing to see.

My thoughts are with you and Dexter.

So sorry for your loss. I remember the famous nose picture but I didn't remember your PF name. Our Lady went through the same thing although we didn't know if it was cancer but it was tumor in/on her spleen. (She was up in years and we didn't think it was right to put her through an operation.)

Again, so sorry. Crying or Very sad

I haven't been on PF in a while because life has just been crazy busy for me, but I did want to post here to say that you are most definitely in my thoughts and prayers.

I haven't been on PF in forever. I am so saddened to hear of Dex passing in August. You made the right decision putting him out of his misery. I know it is so hard when we lose a beloved pet. They become such a part of us.

I hope the passing months have eased the pain. Dex will be forever in our collective PF heart. *hugs*

I haven't been on in a long time. I am so sorry to hear about Dexter. He was a special boy. I remember the picture of him standing on the coffee table. Rest well, sweet Dexter, you were loved by many people that you never met.
