Anteaters up for adoption. And I really, REALLY need one!!!

One of our retaining wall planter box things has an ant colony in it. I disturbed it yesterday evening weeding. Ants, ant larvae and ant eggs. <<Insert BLECHH emoticon>>

I dumped a gallon of vinegar on it to try to kill the larvae. By the time it was dark, none of the larvae was moving anymore.

The weeds are most definitely dead today, the ants are busy making ant hills and the box smells like sea salt and vinegar chips!
Had a hard time keeping Chance out of the box today, she doesn't understand "The ants will bite you."

I've had luck killing carpenter ants with garlic water. Just boil up some garlic, let the water cool and pour it around the perimeter of the place you want to rid of ants. I guess you could just pour it into the planter box, too.

It will make your house smell like a pizza, but, otherwise, it's quite eco-friendly.

Are these biting or stinging ants? Except for carpenter ants, I've never had a problem with regular ants.

I have always used coffee grounds to deter ants. It's good for the soil as well.

Think they are just run of the mill ants.
They are in a wooden retaining wall planter and they're little ant city goes down at least 24" from what I can see.

So far they are OK where they are. As long as they go on with their little ant lives in that box. Otherwise I'll have to put a hit out on them! Wink

I’ll trade you some outdoor ants for the sugar ants in my kitchen. I don’t care if they stay outside but I don’t want them in my kitchen!

I have tried putting out cornmeal (supposedly they think it is sugar and take it back and they can’t digest it or something)

It‘s not working.

Anyone have other ideas for sugar ants....

I did used to have an aardvark. He was a muttly shep/lab cross and he thought carpenter ants were candy-- he gobbled them up, then made retching noises when (from what I could figure).. they tried to climb back out.

Yuk.

I do miss him, he was a good dog, if a little dumb.

I have an "anteater" too, but she does not discriminate and will eat any bug...I have to watch her outside because she will go after the bees, get stung, and then swell up in her face and get hives all over.....

She will eat anything that moves outside....bugs, frogs, snakes, she is my "mighty hunter" YUCK I wish she would stop!

elliesmum,
don`t you hvae a maine coon? just put up on counter where ants are and the coon will either eat them, kill them.or play with them .of course then a drink from the faucet is expected... also anything else up on counter is fair game.

When we 1st got her, Chance would eat all kinds of bugs except moths because moths are icky.

We were always amazed she could see microscopic bugs but failed to see the side of the house.

yes we did have a coonie-- we lost Rupert on Feb 11 this year-- that is probably why we have all the ants this year-- we never had them this bad before.
I miss my evil little beastie.

No ants but flies. I have taken to keeping a bottle of cheap hairspray to kill them. Nasty buggers.

For ants in the house use white vinegar to wipe down the counter tops and add to the mop water! You can also use chalk and draw a line around where they are are coming in...they won't cross it for what ever reason!

No worries, yes coonies are definitely a breed apart.

But you have 8 ... good lord. That must be an interesting house.

I'm gonna try the vinegar thing. Right now though it is the fruit flies that are worse.

For some reason, I have an evil desire to get a box of chalk and a bunch of ants and try making a chalk maze.

I have the sugar ants in my kitchen. My mother tends to spill food a lot, so they have a never ending food supply.

We have been trying the vinegar, and we do have less ants.

spilling food and having anything left for the ants is not a problem here - the dogs "clean" up every bit - I just have to clean the dog slubber off hte floor.

P-lucy - I love the visual I got in my head of your ant maze Laughing
