A study is currently being carried out at the University of British Columbia to learn about the experience of working in an animal shelter (this is a follow-up to a previous study posted on petfinder in which we were recruiting former employees to learn about turnover). We know that shelters can be demanding working environments and we wish to learn how individuals deal with the challenges they face. We are also interested in learning how participants relate to animals- both before their entry into the shelter and during their tenure- and how this shapes their work and life experiences.
We are recruiting individuals who are at least 19 years old, hold a paid position in an SPCA, humane society, or other type of shelter and consider the work they do personally fulfilling and not simply a job.
This is an interview study in which participants are asked to talk about their experience of working in the shelter. Each participant will be interviewed one-on-one by the researcher. The interview will last approximately 45 minutes- 1 hour, and will be conducted via telephone. The names of those involved in the study will be kept completely confidential and will not be shared with anyone, either during the research process or after the study is complete.
The researcher team: Kira Schabram is a PhD student in Organizational Behaviour who has had extensive experience working and volunteering in a variety of animal welfare organizations including the CSPCA and experience conducting research in social service organizations that support humans and/or animals. Dr. Sally Maitlis is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behaviour at the University of British Columbia, with extensive research experience in not-for-profit organizations.
Please contact Kira at kira.schabram@sauder.ubc.ca to learn more about the study and decide if you would like to participate in it. |
