We moved from Missouri to Pennsylvania back in August and brought two cats with us. Since then we have adopted a third and are going back to Missouri for two weeks this month.
There are no kennels nearby where we live in PA that will board cats. Is it better to leave them in our home with plenty of food and water or to take them the 1000 mile drive and have them stay with us at my parents' house? I know both will be stressful for them and I feel like the car ride would be even more stressful for three cats.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. |

| Your best solution is to have a friend come water, feed and clean the boxes. Water will not stay fresh and clean for two weeks. Cat boxes will be a horrible breeding ground for diseases if not cleaned for two weeks. If you can not board or have a friend help, I think you should take them with you. |

Thank you for your response. We do not have any friends here in PA who can come check in on the cats. I work for a University and have even offered the students I work with to pay one of them to check on the cats, but none of them live in town and will be going home for the Holidays.
You make good points about the cat box and water.
I just don't know how the three of them will respond to 18 hours in the car (plus an overnight stay at a hotel).
We have taken two of them on the 18 hour drive here (we have some sedative), but they were not happy at all.
I'm also worried because we would be taking them back to my parents' house where the two used to live. My parents and I have different ideas about cats and they let theirs outside (they have 2). Since we have moved, I have turned one of the cats from a roamer into an indoor cat. I'm afraid if we take her home, she will go outside and we will not be able to find her when we need to come back.
Just because I have my own ideas about my cats, does not mean that my parents respect that and will not let them outside. My parents are the kind who do as they please. |

Check with local vets if they board cats. If your local vets don't, check further away. Driving 1-2 hours to board them sounds better than the alternative.
Also check into petsitters. You can use petsitters.org to find sitters via zipcode.
If you really have to take them with you, then don't let them out! Keep them in your room, they probably won't like it, but it will be safer than to let them out with your parents' cats. |
