Yes, he could be allergic to his food. I've seen it cause more scratching than stomach upset. I would get him allergy tested so you have more of clue what you are dealing with. As it could be anything. Grass, pollen, dust mites, food, fleas, etc. etc.
Don't know about the benadryl. I would think the vet would have something better than that to use. My neighbor swears by it though. She gives an adult dose to her large dogs whenever they need it. |

| Be very careful with the Benadryl, my grand dog ended up in the ER after getting it for an allergic reaction. It was persribed by the vet but one specific type of Benadryl is deadly to dogs. |

B&L - it was probably a formula with added ingredients for congestion or sinus pain, not straight diphenhydramine.
The problem with Benadryl is it needs to be given 3 times per day in order to control the histamine response. Most vets only say to give twice a day which is easier for humans with jobs but with it being given twice per day, there are 2 4-hour periods where the histamines are doing their thing.
We always gave regular adult Benadryl when Chance was on it.

I would definitely switch him to a meat-based food. Meat should be the 1st ingredient and the more meat in the 1st 5 ingredients (or before the 1st fat source) the better.
"Whole grain corn, meat and bone meal, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), chicken, whole grain wheat, egg and chicken flavor, animal digest, brewers rice, salt, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, potassium chloride, choline chloride, added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2), Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, manganese proteinate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium carbonate, brewers dried yeast, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, copper proteinate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, garlic oil, Vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite."
--------------------
The ingredients up to the 1st fat source are the most important to look at.
1. Corn is a a common allergen.
2. Meat and bonemeal can be the rendered meat from any animal, obtained from any source including dead, diseased, disabled and dying (4D) animals. Bonemeal can be horribly contaminated with lead.
3. Corn gluten meal is a cheap binder leftover from processing human foods that adds a small amount of protein. Harmless ingredient that should not be high on the ingredients list if present at all.
4. Soybean meal is the ground flakes which are left over after removal of most of the oil. Low quality filler used to boost the protein content of low quality pet foods.
5. Animal fat is not required to originate from “slaughtered” animals. The rendered animals can be obtained from any source so there is no control over quality or contamination. Can include 4-D animals, restaurant and supermarket refuse, etc.
Artificial food colors are only there to make the food look good to the humans. They shouldn't be in pet food.
Yellow 5 has been shown to be an allergen for people with aspirin sensitivities.
Blue 2 caused brain tumors in mice in at least 1 study though the amounts fed were large.
Red 40 is used mainly in junk food.
Brewers dried yeast can be an allergen for some dogs.
Menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity) has not been approved for long-term feeding to animals and has been linked to some serious health issues in people.
It has been banned by the FDA for OTC items and has been banned in human foods and supplements in many European countries. _________________ Want to know what I have been up to? Visit my website!
