Penny got her Lyme and lepto vaccines yesterday --we spread them out because she had seizures after having them all at onece 2 years ago --she has had lyme vaccine before this time she got Nobivac by Intes vet (Borrelia) and we were told to come back in 3-4 weeks to get a booster ----We were given a sheet with side effects with her history and age approx 8 years and 20 pounds I was VERY concerned when after eating her dinner she didn't want to go for a walk AND when Jim picked her up to go out side she cried like she was in server pain --this morning she seems better but her tail is not up (she is a pom) --eating and walk --did everything normally ----
Question --- I have spent time this am looking up lyme vaccine safety and need ---We had a dog that got and recovered from lepto and I don't want to do that EVER again --and I am not sure if the symptoms she had/has are from lepto or lymes vaccine ----I don't see why we need booster in 3-4 weeks |

If your dog doesn't roam outside by herself, and isn't in situations where she might drink dirty water, or swim in lakes/rivers, she doesn't need the Lepto vaccine.
Leptospira bacteria is spread through the infected urine of livestock and numerous wildlife species, among them raccoons, skunks, mice and rats. |

You dont get lepto from drinking contaiminated water. Thats giardia. Lepto is excreted in wild life urine such as fox and raccoons and it actually is an important vaccine. If a pet smells urine (which they often do smell grass) or even step in urine it can absorb through their paw pads and cause liver and kidney failure. It also is contagious to people. They want it to be boostered in 3 weeks because the initial vaccine does not produce enough antibodies to protect the pet for a long period of time. Once it is boostered again it will be good for one year. Lyme on the other hand if you don't live near areas with deer or ticks its not usually necessary. |

Lepto enters the body through mucous membranes and breaks in the skin, so drinking from contaminated water is certainly one way of contracting it. _________________

True. However i dont agree with the 5thbeatle saying that they don't need to be vaccinated if they don't swim in lakes. Thats outrageous. |
