Post subject: Age for flea treatment

Hi Gang!
I am getting a Lab pup on June5th. She will be 8 weeks old at that time. Is there and minimum age before you should start flea treatments? Don't want to get her sick.

Thanks,
Mike

Congratulations on getting a puppy!

Flea control products can be used over 6 weeks of age, or over 8 weeks of age, it all depends on which product you're using. You need to read the package to know which product to use on your puppy, or ask your vet.

Thanks for the reply. I will be using PetArmor Plus for dogs up to 22 pounds. My breeder says that my pup (Cotton) will be around 10 pounds and 8 weeks of age.

So, perhaps I will wait for a week or so after I get her to start with the treatment just to be on the safe side.

Thanks again!

What a shame that you will be purchasing a dog from a breeder when millions of dogs and puppies are euthanized every year due to lack of homes - especially a labrador, one of number one breeds in shelters and among the least likely to be adopted.

If you insist on purchasing a dog versus rescuing one, I hope you at least intend to have this one spayed at an appropriate age (4 - 6 months) since your last dog died because you neglected to do that. :(

Since PetArmor Plus is the same medication, at the same dose as Frontline Plus, I'd image it's the same guidelines for using it on a puppy. Frontline plus is suitable for dogs over 8 weeks of age.

If you don't already have a flea problem in your home, you would be fine using PetArmor (not PetArmor Plus). The "plus" version adds an insect growth regulator (S-methoprene) which kills flea eggs and larvae.
