Post subject: Low TSH, T3, T4 in dog

My Beagle/Basset, Charlie, just had blood tests. He was very low in all Thyroid hormones. I was told that this is unusual and could be caused by "an underlying disease process"; perhaps an undiagnosed cancer.

I've tried to find more info online, but without much luck. Does anyone have experience with a dog having low TSH, T3 and T4? If so, what caused it?

Thanks!

Hypothyroidism is the condition that occurs when not enough thyroid hormones are produced. Hypothyroidism causes a wide variety of symptoms, but is often suspected in dogs that have trouble with weight gain or obesity and suffer from hair loss and skin problems.
Hypothyroidism can be caused by problems in the dog's own immune system, or it can be caused by certain medications, toxins, or even a lack of exercise.

Most hypothyroid dogs respond well to treatment with synthetic thyroid medication. Hypothyroid dogs who receive proper treatment have a normal life span and are able to maintain good health well into their golden years.
Only your vet can rule out the possibility of cancer, but it might be helpful to know that both Basset Hound and Beagles have a predisposition for hypothyroidism. I had a Beagle/Basset mix that developed a borderline case of hypothyroidism, Bud lived to be 18.

Here is some info on understanding the results of the Thyroid tests:
