Statehouse rally planned for Chesterfield County animals--THIS Thursday, April 21 at 3:00pm!
Animal lovers and activists from across the Carolinas will make a statement April 21 at the rally planned at the North grounds and the steps of the South Carolina Statehouse.
The group will be in Columbia in support of the animals killed at the Chesterfield County animal shelter, as well as to promote the need for stronger animal protection laws throughout the state.
According to the Animal Adoption League they are hosting the rally to ensure that the situation in Chesterfield County does not happen again and that the deaths of the animals was not in vain.
"We hope that a strong showing of supporters will encourage our state senators and our governor to consider upgrading our animal protection laws and authorize the inspection of animal shelters throughout the state," read a web posting by the Adoption League. "All of us together can ensure that the violent death of the animals in Chesterfield will not have been in vain."
The rally stems from the allegations made in early March that 22 dogs were shot at the animal shelter instead of being euthanized by lethal injection. A search of the field across from the shelter turned up the bodies of two dogs that had been shot. The SC Attorney General and SLED are currently investigating the situation and the shelter's four employees are on administrative leave. Investigation results are expected to be released to the public soon.
Some of the League's goals for the rally are to get Carolinian's to ask for government support in the effort to enforce animal protection laws, new laws to end the suffering of animals in SC, and to insist on prosecution for the crimes committed in Chesterfield. Other goals include:
*Ask SC Governor to appoint a task force of individuals to inspect and propose improvements to SC shelters.
*Ask for stronger spay/neuter laws so that shelters will not be used as birth control alternatives.
*Require all SC shelters be open to approved rescue groups whose goal it is to save animals slated for euthanasia.
*Request state-wide anti-tethering law to help prevent neglect, unwanted litters, dog fighting, and aggression in dogs.
*State-wide law requiring that all animals have adequate shelter, shade, bedding, a clean living environment and fresh food and water daily.
Currently there are close to 200 individuals planning to attend the event, all attendees are encouraged to wear a black shirt in memorial or a green shirt to represent hope and also to make a sign to carry.
