Hey, I'm new here from CT, USA. I adopted a wonderful 8 year old tabby a few weeks ago due to a mix up, and I'm still torn up by what's happened - I visited the shelter twice, with my heart set on a sweet 13 year special needs boy. My second visit, he was so much more affectionate, and I was happy he seemed to have settled in. My partner and I spent an hour with him that day, before making the decision to adopt him - only to find out when they scanned his microchip that he was the wrong cat! But I fell in love with this latest incarnation, and made the heartwrenching decision to take home this younger girl - I renamed her Jones (she was Marbles, but that was the name of my partner's recently deceased and beloved dog).
After giving Jones time to settle in and get to know her, I called the shelter to see if the other guy was still there - I was able to care for him couldn't leave him behind. All they would tell me was that he'd "left the building" - and after reading some stories about the shelter, I'm worried he may not have left alive.
So that's how I got here, but I've been interested in (if not always on 100% board with) animal rights theory and activism for several years. At the risk of sounding arrogant or presumptuous (and almost certainly revealing my newbie status), I was wondering if rescues in the CT area are in need of hands on volunteers, and in what capacity. Specifically, my interest was piqued by the "transport" section on here, as I have a reliable car and enjoy driving (even for long stretches). So, could anyone point me to volunteer opportunities are available at rescues around here, if any, or Rescue101 information? And how would a newb go about establishing a relationship with one? I'd love to help out in any way I can - administrative work, flyering, phone banking, whatever! - though I'm unable to foster dogs. |

Maybe you could ask the shelter you adopted from if you could foster a cat. (An older cat, maybe...so it wouldn't be leaving the building, for a destination undisclosed. ) I'm sure you'll be able to find a way to help the animals in your area of CT. All the animals in shelters could use a gentle touch and some human interaction. There's always help needed somewhere. Thanks for wanting to help. |

Hello, Jones and welcome! Thank you for adopting a shelter cat.
If you're close by we could very much use your help. We have wonderful volunteer opportunities, from transport, fostering, cat and kitten socialization to our shelter dog training program, etc. , you name it we need it. The shelter is always busy, especially weekends, and can be a bit chaotic so please don't be put off if it takes someone a little bit to get you started.
