Recently my room mates dog Tekla (Approx 1 year old Labrador Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix) underwent a surgery called Episioplasty to correct Vulvar Hypoplasia. Its basically where she has a flap of skin that covers the vulva that caused her to have chronic bladder infections.
We had the surgery almost a week ago now and it seems she is doing good but like any dog mommy I worry. She appears to have pulled 2 or 3 stitches out by rubbing the side of the cone she is wearing against herself in an attempt to lick, I fixed this problem by buying some doggy diapers which seem to work great even though she seems less than pleased with her new panties. One more week and its time for the stitching to come out. I think it looks pretty rough but after watching the surgery be performed on youtube and reading through some other blogs it doesn't seem too bad. Her vulva appears a bit crooked now though :\ I personally have never had female dogs so I'm in a whole new world as it were.
I was just wondering if anyone has had this procedure done on their dog and what the outcome was like? Anything that I should be concerned about or keep an extra close eye on? I already know about excessive redness/swelling and discharge and I make sure to keep her incision site clean but it would be helpful to get some first hand advice instead of just reading random sites via google search! |

It sounds like you're doing fine. Keep the area clean, and continue to prevent your dog from licking. The dog panties is a good solution.
I will assume that your dog has been spayed. If she isn't, there is a good chance the condition will recur during her next heat cycle. This surgery pretty well ensures the complete resolution of the UTI's after healing is complete, if your dog has been spayed. Spaying prevents recurrence. |
