Post subject: Help!! Chasing cars!!

I have an 8 month old pug/border collie mix female. We have had her since she was 8 weeks old. Overall, she is a wonderful dog. However, we have a problem with her chasing cars. Anytime she is outside and a car goes by or pulls in the driveway she wants to chase them. She will even chase my children when they are riding their bikes or my 4 year old on his little tykes car. I hate having to keep her tied up outside, but I am afraid that she is going to get hit by a car. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this behavior and ensure that my pup lives a long, happy, healthy life? Thank you all in advance for your help.

Keep her inside and when she needs to go outside, keep her on a leash?

That is what I have been doing with her. However, my issue comes up when the other dogs and the kids are playing outside and she is in the house. She whines and wants to be able to go out and play with everyone else. That is why I am looking for solutions that would allow her to enjoy the time outside with everyone else while keeping her safe.

It's a rare, RARE dog who is safe in an unfenced yard when there are cars passing by on the street, especially when supervision is being provided by children busy playing with each other. Save yourself heartache - only let the dogs out in a fenced enclosure, or on lead. I can't tell you the number of people who were absolutely, positively CERTAIN their dogs would never chase a car or a bike or a motorcycle - until the day they did. Some of the dogs actually survived.

I am sorry. I did not mean to imply that the children are watching the dogs. I am always out there with them. Yes, I do agree that she is safest on the lead whenever she is outside. She just breaks my heart sometimes because she seems so sad when everyone else is out running around. I am looking into getting a kennel run. That way she has some sort of freedom, but not enough to get hurt. I live out in the country and have 10 acres of land. I rent the house, but have thought about talking with the landlord about possibly fencing in at least part of the yard for the dogs. Thank you for your reply.

Fence the yard for her. If you can't leave the fence up, you could put it up and take it down when you move. That is what we have done the past 10 years and 4 moves. What type of exercise does he get?

I now have a dog run for them during the day while I am at work. That way they have freedom to run around and play, but are also kept safe. As far as exercise, she gets a long walk every evening and also time to play when I am supervising her. She has just recently started showing an interest in her toys and likes to play fetch and run around now.

Give her LOTS of exercise....a tired dog is a happy dog. Try sheep herding, flyball or agility with her.

I agree with those who have suggested using a leash outside. Good luck!
