Our search for a middle aged male boxer ended with us taking home "Kona"! I had been checking Petfinder for awhile and this cute boy came up at a local animal shelter last Thursday. I went Friday to check him out and fell in love. He wasn't neutered so I couldn't take him home till Monday night, Nov 23. I have 4 indoor cats so they cat tested him for me. He pretty much ignored them so I felt good about that. He tested positive for whipworm so he is very underweight and has blood in his stool. We just got done with our initial 3 day Panacur treatment and will follow up with the subsequent ones in 3 wks. He was found on the streets but someone had him before b/c he is very well trained. Just an all around great dog! He pretty much ignores my cats except if they run, he is interested and starts to chase. We are working on that as well as crate training. I don't think he has ever been in a crate so any tips on crate training an adult dog are welcome!! Baby steps!
We can't wait to watch him come out of his shell. He was quite mellow and shy at the shelter. We are getting some boxer wiggles out of him now so that's fun.
I hope the pictures show up...I just created a Photobucket account so I could post them. Never done it before so here goes...

What a lucky boxer. May you have much happiness together. The image didn't come out.
It looks like you have too many [img] thingies. |

Google crate training. We just adopted a new dog and due to work situations he has to be crated. Well, he trashed the crate I borrowed-nice. But my son has been working with him and it's helped a lot in just a few days. He just brings him to the crate and offers some dog food when he's in there. Leave the door open at first. Gradually increase the time, and if he will work at a Kong fill one with frozen peanut butter and let him eat it in there. He'll think the crate is great. Eventually you can shut the door and do these same things. You can also feed him his meals in it.
He's a very cute dog-so skinny! and lucky to have found you. |

Thanks! The crate training is going pretty well. Or at least, he hasn't trashed anything (LOL!) and when I come to get him out, he is either just sitting up (but quiet!) looking for me, or laying down sleeping! I haven't left him for a very long time though. Since I work at home, it is really just for trips out of the house where I can't take him with. Usually won't be for more than a few hrs at most. I did get a Kong but haven't tried it yet. I'll have to freeze some peanut butter. He is VERY food motivated so I'm sure he'll love that.
We went to the park today for his first time. I used to go several times a week with my last boxer that we lost in June. I hadn't had the heart to go since so this was MY first time back too. Felt great.
Thanks all! He is putting on weight thanks to an extra meal every day (3 instead of two) and some rice with scrambled egg mixed in or cottage cheese. He is definitely looking better than a week ago.
I'll try to post more pics when he has put on some more weight. |

Awwww! I love his big boxer cheeks and his beautiful tiger striped coat. I'm so glad to hear that he found his forever home and is being well taken care of, I feel like that's what all dogs need - that, and some lovin! Hope you guys have a wonderful time together. |
