I wanted to know more about cats since we
just had gotten Miagi when I joined in May 2004.
Plus, Morwenna told me about this site and
I wanted to learn more about volunteering
at shelters, too. Smile

So I guess it was a pet related question that drew
me to this site. But I was looking at pets on
petfinder just to look and found the
message boards, so I joined. Smile

So I guess I was referred by someone and had a pet-related question.

kpc, may I see pictures of your white GSDs? Orrin might be a white GSD mix. Most people think so, anyhow.

I found the message boards and lurked for a long time. A few months after we bought our fist house I started actively looking for a canine companion and lurking actively (like, every day almost). Then I adopted Orrin and realized I was in a little over my head. I joined up for the advice and the support. I've learned a lot and, even better, I've gained reinforcement for my "crazy animal lover" viewpoints. I oft felt isolated before joining but now I know I'm not really all that odd. (Or we are all terribly odd, but it is okay Rolling Eyes )

I'm not really sure, but I think this is how it happened, LOL. I had been on AOL pet themed message boards, and hated them. Most of those people didnt take very good care of their pets and were very breeder-friendly, and I was always pissy. I wasnt involved in rescue yet, but I was pro-rescue. Somehow in my search for a board with pet owners more like myself, I found the old Petfinder boards. I think this was sometime around the end of 2001. It was incredibly crazy back then.....and so much fun, LOL. Things sure have changed here.

Anyone remember Red Raven? Smile

I found this board by accident when I was going through PF pages looking at cats. Finding this board was an eye-opener to me, and I found out I really didn't know much about cats until I came here. Posters have come and gone, some wonderful, and some not so much, but I have learned from them all and I'm very grateful for having discovered this board.

I've also made some wonderful friends here, without having to step foot off my little island. Smile

I was on line looking for chow rescues back in 2003. I found a group, she sent me a link to a puppy listed on PF. I adopted the puppy, went back a month later and adopted another puppy from a shelter listed on PF. I spent hours looking at all the dogs and cats for adoption. Then I stumbled on the message boards - the old ones - and have been hooked ever since.

Then along comes Mace - who I was "coerced" into adopting Laughing by certain PF members. I had originally decided to pull him, foster and try to move him right into a chow rescue as soon as I could. I found the old email address from the lady I had found my first pup through, emailed her, she remembered me and we have now become good friends through our love of chows. Very Happy I have also met a few others from this board and they are wonderful people. It is nice to be able to converse with others who - even though they may have differing opinions on certain issues - always understand how important furbabies are and how deeply they can touch your soul. No one here ever thinks it is stupid to cry over a cat - or a rat, fish, hamster, etc. No one here would ever say "why would anyone drive 100 miles for a cat??" As different as we all are, we all share a common love for animals and our willingness to go the extra mile to help them.

a friend sent me a link to petfinder because she wanted to adopt a dog on this site.

I am a person who likes to click every link on a website to learn more about it. I went through classifieds and all the links and found the messageboards through exploration.

I joined and learned a ton! I liked the old boards as well and wished I was as knowledgable then as I am now. But we live and we learn and I wished the boards would pick back up. I enjoy talking to people who understand my strong feelings for animals and the need to help when we can.

And petfinder has also helped john connect more with animals. He wasnt nearly as into them before but now he gets just as passionate as I do when he sees an animal in need. And he has smarts and a good head on his shoulders which helps doubly!

Very Happy

We started out looking at dogs and cats at local shelters and rescues.
Back then, we had a dog and 2 cats.
Browsing the site we found forums.
We now have 5 dogs (one with a potential adopter, yay!) and 49 cats.
Sat. we are transporting a prego dog during the day and overnighting 2 others.
This site has changed our lives dramatically!! (for the better!)

Well let's see. I started dating my now husband in 2001. I had Tiger at that time (she's still here and is around 11 yrs old). He decided that he wanted to get a pet and decided on a cat. So he is the one that actually stumbled across petfinder to begin with and he is actually the one to stumble across the message board. I just happen to be the one that decided to sign up for the message board. Oh and he did find his cat through PF. That would be Ariel whom we adopted from a rescue over in the Rockingham area. They drove half way between there and Charlotte to meet us and so he could meet Ariel. I was not involved in rescue at the time. I did get involved for a couple of years in rescue, but then left that group and am not currently involved in rescue.

I am an other also, I came here back in 2002 while trying to adopt a second dog, I came in as anon. blasting rescues for requiring fences. I got kicked in the butt by some of the most knowledgeable people I have had the pleasure to spend time with on a messageboard and never left. We fed pedigree then too, and I couldn't believe that anyone would tell me that dogfood mattered, go figure. It used to be this awesome place with the cream of the crop in pet ownership and great rescuers, now, almost good enough gets you a major pat on the back. Crying or Very sad

I came on here in 2003 first posting in pet care cause I had a sick cocker spaniel-- he passed away in 2004 from Liver failure but I stayed around-- got booted off in the grand boot of 2004-05 and came back as Elliesmum.

When I started looking on PF in general I was looking for a pug as a companion for my Buddy. I was cruising the classifieds and the shelter postings with no luck.

I found my dog on PF and wanted to share our story, so I joined. I have gotten a lot of good advise and learned a lot about animals.

I believe I was like 2002/2003 sometime. I came on because my MIL was looking at a dog through a rescue on here and stumbled onto the messageboards. I lurked and read for a LONG TIME before I ever posted! Laughing I had no dog or cat then just my parrot Merlin. I truely felt and oddball as there aren't alot of birdy people here. But now I have the fur crew too!

I found it by mistake in 2001 or 2002. I was posting the pets for our shelter in the PF listings. I hadn't ventured outside the area to post pets. I had seen the "messages" link but figured it was for messages and never paid too much attention to it. I clicked it one day when I was playing around and found the old boards. Lurked a few days and liked what I saw. I loved that it was soooo rescue oriented. There were so many other types of boards but I hadn't found any that were so rescue minded.
