Hey folks! As you know we have a new forum for Moderated Topics...or Ask the Experts as we have renamed it. If you are not familiar, once a month we invite a different expert from the Animal Welfare world to join us and answer YOUR questions!
Where else can you go that you can get FREE advice on your most pressing issues or concerns regarding your pets, your shelter or yourself?
I want to extend a very special thanks to all the experts and forum participants who joined us in our 2008 topics. As we look forward to 2009 we are looking for your suggestions. What issues are you looking for answers to in your home, community, or organization? Who can we invite to the forums that you would love the chance to get expert advice from?
This forum is for you and about you, so we want to know how best to provide everyone with the best possible selection of topics. If we get an overwhelming number of suggestions we can have more than one topic each month and therefore provide you with even more great information to make your experience here better.
Thanks so much!
PS....if you don't feel comfortable posting you can email me at messageboard@petfinder.com and we will be very happy to add your suggestions to the list. Thanks again! |

Maybe you could do "dealing with your dominant/hardheaded dog" or one for people interested in fostering but know nothing about it and want to know about it from people that do foster.
I think there is alot of misinformation out there about how to deal with a dog with a dominant personality (thanks in part to Cesar Milan) and it would be helpful to get expert advice on that |

I think it was a good first year in the Moderated Topics.
I think that some sort of "Ask the Vet" would be great! It would be even better, in my opinion, if you had one vet who would post each month, throughout the month. Not anything that is life threatening, but new protocols in HW treatment would be cool. Pediatric spay/neuters. Different flea remedies, etc.
Maybe the same idea with behavior/training. Even more basic, maybe housetraining tips, how to walk a dog on loose leash, introducing a new dog/cat to your existing pets, etc.
Same thing with food and nutrition. How to find a good food for your pets. Recipes for homemade biscuits. What supplements are good for your pets.
And I still think we need to have monthly contests! LOL _________________

I like that idea, but I've seen disastrous results on a couple of other boards with an ask a vet thing. It's one of those things that people are pretty passionate about and that's great and all, but I've seen a few vets elsewhere who donated time to do this ripped to shreds by University Of Google graduate internet veterinarians. Everybody wants to be an internet vet these days.
I do like the idea in theory, though. |

I really like the "Ask the Vet" and "Pet Nutriion" suggestions.
I like jroland's idea too but would like to expand it - maybe several chapters(?)
Rehabbing/working with the rescue dog. What to do? When/if/why he bit? What is next?
---------------
Someone else can suggest the next chapter. |

Instead of an Ask the Vet as I agree with Horsefeathers...I too have seen some pretty heated things happen and we want our experts to have a good experience and spread the word about the forums so others will want to come too, what about we do address specific issues.
I have notice a large number of orthopedic threads, mostly around hip dysplasia (of which my own dog suffers), but also joint and general arthritis issues, knee problems etc...so how about a topic on Orthopedics with a licensed Orthopod
Then perhaps have a Preventative thread re: vaccines, heartworm preventative, deworming, etc where you can ask about such items.
I was also thinking about a month specifically dedicated to our precious senior pets.
We will definitely be having behaviorists/trainers again this year. If you have suggestions on anyone you think would be a good speaker please feel free to send those suggestions as well.
And...lastly... I will work on a contest too. Thanks again!

I like the idea of the preventative thread and the senior thread, as my animals all are getting up there in age....the youngest in my house is 7 years old. I'm beginning to deal with some senior issues and I'd like to see a thread like that. _________________

I see so many dogs on a daily basis that are obese. Would something on overweight dogs and weight control be appropriate?
Another topic that I think might help people would be dermatology. |

A "Why pets do the things they do" kind of thread might be fun. We've talked about the quirky behaviors some of our pets have in the past, it might be interesting to learn why those behaviors exist. Not bad behaviors that we want to stop/modify, but something like "Why does my dog lift his lips and grin at me when he's happy to see me/chew on her nails/suck on his blanket/circle three times before lying down/etc"
Understanding the instinct or reason that drives what we may percieve as quirky behavior. What's it mean?
I would love to know why my spayed female cat waits until I'm sleeping (or trying to ) and then starts purring, rubs her face against my cheek 2-3 times, sqeezes my cheek with her teeth and then gnashes her teeth together like she's chewing on air and then stands there with a blissful look on her face. There has to be some purpose in her feline mind. |

| I think another great health topic would be allergies. They are so frustrating and confusing to deal with. |

How about a thread about getting involved in dog sports (agility, flyball, tracking, carting, etc.). I've thought about doing agility with our dog, but that's where it stays. I'd love to see an expert (or panel of experts) talk about what is needed to get into the sport(s) - like cost, time, training, and what type of dog (temperment/personality) would be most suited. Also include links to major organizations for those who develop an interest and want to pursue the sport(s). _________________

I love the idea of a senior pet thread.
What about a pet loss thread. Most of us have been there and gone through the guilt of making decisions and second guessing. I found the people here very supportive when I lost Sable and found out I wasn't alone in my second guessing and guilt when I let her go. I know there are pet loss sites but there are many who don't. I don't know how you could make it into an informative thread but I think many could add some perspective that could help. _________________

Something devoted to the seniors would be great. In the past 3 years I've adopted 4 dogs in the 10 plus age category, 2 are still with me and 2 have crossed over. I've had a lot to learn about caring for the aging dog and a few scary times too that were not life threatening but I thought they were at first because I didn't know what was happening.
The health issues - loss of hearing and/or vision, canine vestibular disease, arthritis, pain management, acupuncture, changing dietary and exercise needs, coping with incontinence, knowing when it's time to let go, etc.
Thanks |
