Not me. I'm going to sleep in and enjoy my day off work. Besides, I don't have anyone to buy gifts for. My family has already agreed we're not exchanging gifts this year since money is tight for everyone.

Wal-Mart worker dies after crowd rushes store
Pregnant woman also knocked down, might have had miscarriage

NEW YORK - A Wal-Mart worker has died after being trampled by a throng of unruly shoppers shortly after the Long Island store opened Friday, police said. Unconfirmed reports said a pregnant woman also miscarried as the crowd rushed in.

Nassau County police said the 34-year-old Wal-Mart worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m. ET, an hour after the store opened.

A police statement said a throng of shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking him to the ground." The exact cause of death "will be determined by the medical examiner's office," the police stated.

A coworker said the clerk was "bum-rushed by 200 people," according to the New York Daily News. "They took the doors off the hinges," said Jimmy Overby. "He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too ... I literally had to fight people off my back."

Police added that "a 28-year-old pregnant female was also transported to an area hospital for observation."

Shopper Jessica Keyes told the Daily News that she saw the woman being knocked down near where the worker lay dying.

According to Keys, when paramedics arrived they told the woman that "there's nothing we can do. The baby is gone."

Other shoppers said people kept entering the story as emergency crews attended the woman and store clerk.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead," the Daily News quoted shopper Halcyon Alexander as saying. "People were still coming through."

"They're savages," shopper Kimberly Cribbs said of the crowd. "It's sad. It's terrible."

Police added that three other shoppers " suffered minor injuries and were transported to area hospitals."

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., in Bentonville, Ark., would not confirm the reports of a stampede during the day-after-Thanksgiving bargain hunting, but said a "medical emergency" caused them to close the store.

Shocked

Yeah, so after my vehement, foot stomping, snorting, arms folded, I ain't kidding insistence that I'm not going out today, my best friend called. I already knew what was coming.

"Hey, what are you doing today?"

NOTHING. Staying home. Not going out. Just hanging out around the house. Wild horses couldn't drag me out today."

"Oh."

awkward pause, crickets chirping

"Sigh. Why; what's up?"

"Oh! Well.... deep breath

I gotta gotoWalMart,gotoAlltel,
pickupsomegiftsforashut-in,stopatthegrocerystore,
stopatthedollarstore,
no,theotherdollarstore,wellmaybebothofthem,
takethisgirltowork,andgetthebrakesfixedonmycar.

another deep breath

I was thinking maybe we could just hang out while they're working on my car (insert annoying perkiness here~~> Exclamation Very Happy Very Happy Exclamation )."

So since I'm such a giver and all, I'm heading into town. Someone cover me.

Now that's just senseless about that Wal*Mart incident. Senseless and stupid. Are people so self absorbed and stupid that they're willing to kill and maim for the "joy of giving"? It makes me angry. I really want to hope that it's hyperbole and that the death of that poor worker was due to some unforeseen medical condition. Or something like that. I don't even want to have to process that much human greed. Sad

I went, but not at 5 am. It had been really crazy before I got there- ppl knocked over displays and threw things around. Lines were still long. I still managed to get what I wanted (jeans, hoodies, and a puffer jacket). I hate going out on Black Friday...but this year money has been tight, and i'd rather get the stuff at 8 dollars a piece versus 20.

RIP to the man and unborn child. I guess there have been shootings in that part of town over CARSEATS in the past.

Getting ready to go to work soon- have a good Black Friday all!!

There is an updated story by New York Daily News that says the 28 year old woman is in the hospital for observation and that she did not have a miscarriage.

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2008/11/28/2008-11-28_worker_dies_at_long_island_walmart_after.html

There are also pictures of the crowd that was outside right before the employee was killed by the shoppers. Scary stuff. Also scary are some of the comments people have made...I quit reading, because I am at the point where people make me want to puke my guts out.

Offering a spectacular bargain awesome incredibly amazing price on something to lure in shoppers...shoppers who know you probably only have two of those items, so by golly they are going to get there early and be first...it is an accident waiting to happen. That many people just are not going to fit through a door at one time...and the advertisements fairly whip them into a frenzy.

I wonder if the murderers got the bargains they went to Wal-Mart for? I wonder if they even slowed down...I doubt it, they would have been trampled too. I wonder if they will think about the family of the man they killed when Christmas rolls around.

This was stupid and senseless. The --darn-- stores should be closed, or it should be business as usual. The whole black Friday thing has gotten totally out of control...and has been for years.

Horsefeathers! that mammoth NO. turned out to be my fate in the wee early hours of this morning. I had spent all night going through early-bird ads and checking prices online but what it all boiled down to were maybe two or three items that I really wanted.. I decided they went worth all the fuss. So I guess my vote was really "I'm out"..

That is absolutely unbelievable! But sadly it seems that people being trampled on is expected every Black Friday event. I checked out photos of the crazy crowds out there this morning and am glad I avoided it. I'm so tiny that I might have even been a victim myself to being knocked down and mowed over! The whole thing is just terrible. Hope momma recovers and doesn't lose baby.

For those that went and got stuff -- did ya get anything good!? Very Happy

unFREAKIN believable. They took the doors OFF THE HINGES? . They couldnt wait the however much longer it would be to let the store open? and then to trample an employee to death and knock over a pregnant woman....all in the name of a "bargain"??????

no "bargain" is worth a person's life, and the potential loss of a child.

I have never shopped "Black Friday" since it became that. When I was young the stores would open an hour earlier, and stay open till 9:00 on weekdays, when they usually closed at 5:00 or 6:00. They did that throughout the whole Christmas shopping season. not just the Friday after Thanksgiving. The only thing I would go to a store for today might be medicine.

prayers for the person who was killed, and for the woman's baby.
this is just appalling.....

Evil or Very Mad
