Post subject: Ohio Rescue hit by storm needs help/support...

I am cross posting this from the border collie rescue forum that I also belong to...

I hope it's appropriate to post this here -- if not, my apologies! Maybe there's a different forum this is supposed to be in -- if so,
please let me know! Smile

As a Border Collie enthusiast, I try to support rescue & transport efforts, as this breed is one of THE most relinquished & "dumped" breeds in shelters today (next to labradors). They are a quirky breed that requires understanding of their instincts BEFORE taking one on as a pet (if it's not for farm work).

For the past several years, I've supported "FOR THE LOVE OF PETE BORDER COLLIE RESCUE", run by my friend Vicki Anderson (Ohio).

Earlier this year, Vicki picked up - and moved out to the country in order to better accommodate her rescues, and give them a life of "luxury" in the wide open spaces. The move itself was financially difficult - but she did it anyway out of her devotion to rescuing border collies (many of which come from Amish country).

Vicki also takes in other "farm" breeds as well as there is room - but primarily, her rescues are from Amish communities, and are within days, if not minutes, of certain execution.

Right now - Vicki is going through the most difficult time in the history of her BC Rescue... and she needs help!

The "remnants" of Hurricane Ike hit Ohio Sunday night - and hard. Lots of damage and power outages.

Vicki's power was finally restored late last night, however - it came too late........... all of her food for herself -- AND the dogs -- went bad (she feeds raw primarily -- so without refrigeration, hundreds of dollars of food was lost).

Vicki had been unable to leave her home (by order of the electric company) since the storm, as she has had LIVE POWER LINES DOWN across her driveway & street. She couldn't go out to buy more dogfood, or to work... but FAR WORSE than that, she had been unable to leave to get veterinary care for her elderly, "soul-mate" BC, Flick, who had become ill just after the storm hit, and was going downhill fast.

With most of the electric company's repair teams down in TX to assist with Hurricane Ike relief, there has been very little help available to residents in Ohio who suffered storm damage.

Vicki made SEVERAL calls for help, but no one ever showed up.

Finally, Vicki called the electric company one last time.... but this time she was in tears, and desperate -- she told them her dog was DYING, and she could not leave the house to seek help. Thankfully, she reached a sympathetic ear, and within an hour (last night) the power lines were moved enough for her to be able to leave her home, and take Flick to the vet (and get to work today).

Normally, Vicki does all right keeping her head above water, but this has proven to be a situation she needs help with. She has more than 15 rescued Border Collies to feed and care for -- and has suffered an extraordinary financial loss (damage to her home, loss of all of her fresh food, and loss of a week's worth of wages).

Vicki's friends & supporters and I are hoping to rally support from the rescue world!!!

We are working to help Vicki set up a new donation page for her website, as she does not have internet access right now to do so (result of storm damage).
But it will take some time to get it up and running..

In the meantime... her site does have a paypal link on one of her older pages (where she was needing help for special surgery for a rescue named Puck) --

You can view Vicki's petfinder page HERE: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/OH408.html
(she has been unable to post her current rescues due to the move, so the page is not updated)

If you donate, even if it's only $1, that $1 adds up.. and we would be ETERNALLY GRATEFUL.

If you can educate me on any financial resources available to rescuers out there who have hit upon extraordinary circumstances (catastrophic weather, illness, etc), PLEASE don't hesitate to contact me (PM)! I'm all ears!

I have no doubt FOR THE LOVE OF PETE BC RESCUE will be back on its feet shortly -- this is just a bump in the road.

Thank you for your support!
Please feel free to crosspost this message!
