PIUTE FIRE PROCEDURES
This from the Kern County Fire Dept:
Companion Sheltering
A human shelter has been established at the Kern River Valley Senior Center (6409 Lake Isabella Blvd,
Lake Isabella). In the event evacuees arrive to the facility with companion animals, Kern County Animal
Control will provide personnel and equipment assistance as needed. However, animal owners need to
be encouraged to transport animals in crates and bring their own supplies
Animal Control will supply the following as needed:
1. Leashes, crates, blankets, food, bowels, litter boxes, litter.
2. The animals will be vaccinated upon intake with rabies, DHPP and bordatella unless owners
provide proof of current vaccinations.
3. The animals will be processed through our intake system and identified with a blue/pink collar.
Owners and animals will have picture taken together.
4. Owners will be responsible for the care of their pets.
5. Animal Control will provide oversight to the shelter.

Large Animal Evacuation
In the event evacuees need shelter and/or transportation assistance with horses and smaller farm
animals (no cows):
1. Transportation assistance: KCAC has 2 horse trailers as well as a list of persons who have
volunteered to assist as needed. Please have animal owners contact one of the following staff.
Staff will put the animal owner in touch with the volunteer transporter.

Large Animal Sheltering Assistance
Shelter assistance: The Lake Isabella Animal Shelter located at 14891 Hwy 178, Southlake has space for
up to 30 horses. Mares with foals, and stallions will be directed to other locations.
Services provided: Animal owners must be encouraged to bring the required supplies for the care of
their animals.
• At Lake Isabella Shelter, routine care will be provided. Any special needs must be handled by
animal owner.
• Animals will be “painted” with owner’s name for identification purposes. Intake papers will be
completed.
• If animals arrive without feed, feed will be provided
• At private homes, care and feed will be as arranged between volunteer home shelter owner and
animal owner.

*Residents on a Precautionary Evacuation are advised to keep large animals at the shelter (or with family and friends) away from the affected area until all evacuation orders have been lifted.

* Small Animal/Pets Shelter: North Valley Animal Rescue is coordinating shelter for small animals. Its telephone number is 530-895-0000
* Large Animal Shelter: Chico State Farm (Large Animals) 311 Nicholas C. Schouten Lane (off Hagen Ln.) Chico State Farm is Full. The public is being advised at this point to seek private boarding for large animals. The Butte County Emergency Operations Center is working to find alternative shelter locations for large animals and pets.

* If you are given orders to evacuate, bring your animals with you.
* The SPCA will operate an emergency animal evacuation shelter for household pets (cats, dogs, etc.) adjacent to any American Red Cross evacuation site.
* The SPCA has multiple equine and livestock shelters on-call.
* Please contact The SPCA first at 373-2631 or at 646-5534 (after hours) for information on or assistance with evacuating pets, horses and livestock.
* Call The SPCA first when evacuating livestock. For household pets, you may come directly to The SPCA emergency shelter located adjacent to the American Red Cross shelter.
* The SPCA animal rescue team is available to assist with emergency animal evacuations for both pets and livestock.
* Pet-friendly hotels and motels are listed on our website.
