This was the first show of the series I got to work on, and I think I was having as much fun as the family! When Cleopatra, the hairless cat came in, I thought I had seen it all... but we topped ourselves by having Ranger, the parrot, sing in the church.... I love this episode!

--David Tobin, Producer

I remember when we brought in the first Teacher's Pet, Ranger the Macaw, to the Smith’s home. The parrot's six--foot cage was so big that we couldn’t get it into their house, so we had to put it in their back yard!

-- Cara Goldberg, Line Producer

For us in production, The Smith Family was the very first family with whom we filmed, and they were absolutely delightful and game for everything!
I was really impressed that they were willing to bring Ranger, the Macaw to church with them, and that Darnell and Dorian made him a part of the band!

-- Esther Reyes, Co-Executive Producer

I worked on The Smiths episode, helping to edit the show in post-production, but the first time I really experienced them was when I heard Darnell's musical CD being played at the office -- his funky tunes are great to work to, very inspiring!

-- Robin Acutt, Producer

This was a good episode. I really liked the Macaw, that was pretty cool. My husband also thought it was neat, although his comment was if you are going to have a bird you had better have a lot of time for it. He had a bird at one point when he was in the military. Unfortunately it died of loneliness while he was deployed. (This was before I met him, so I never got to meet the bird.)

EP 6 The Smith Family

Hello all! My name's Karen and I was the wardrobe designer for the show. I was in charge of dressing Dina and Jarod and making sure they looked fabulous every day. Basically, I invested in a LOT of lint brushes!

Working on the show was a truly amazing experience as I am an animal LOVER! It was great fun being around so many kinds of animals and learning about them as the families were learning. Which brings me to another point. The families we were able to work with were so warm and welcoming. Each had its own quality and were all ready and willing to embrace some pretty unique animals.

I have to admit, though, that the episode which stands out most in my mind is our very first episode because I met my new pooch, Dignan. We were shooting at the South LA Shelter and I had meandered in to the shelter and here was this adorable little face looking up at me through his bars! It took me all of about a half an hour to decide I had to take this guy home with me. I have another dog named Hank who is a Wheaten Terrier and I thought the new guy, being a Welsh Terrier, would be a perfect addition and Hank would have a constant companion. It's been about six months now and he has settled right in to our little family and I would be hard pressed to try and separate Hank and Dignan now.

I feel so fortunate having worked on the show because it was always a new adventure everyday and I came out with an amazing addition to my family!
