"It was wonderful to visit the Hemopet Greyhound Shelter in Garden Grove, CA. I've never been to a shelter that's also a blood bank, and who knew that Greyhounds blood is compatible with dogs and cats! This gave me a whole new appreciation for Greyhounds. And I was so impressed by the people who work there! All the volunteers were so dedicated and they were really excited to have a film crew there to show their work to the world. Our only challenge was that with all the dogs barking, we couldn't shoot the adoption scenes inside. We had to find a grassy spot outside the shelter where we could shoot Greg and Divinity meeting the greyhounds."

Hi! It's Hunter's dad, Greg. I want to make a slight correction to Petadmin's post. Greyhounds are for sure the only universal canine blood donor but I don't think their blood is compatible with cats. I may be wrong but I'm not sure there is any blood compatibility between animals of different species.
Hemopet is a fantastic facility. We would have loved to stay and tour their kennel but the filming schedule didn't allow for it. It's probably all for the best anyway, we would have no doubt adopted a few more greyhounds. |

It is pretty neat getting the inside story on how the filming was done. We were on site the day Star had her big day and it was pretty neat. It really gave a whole new respect for how hard it is to actually make decent TV programs! Tending rescued horses is almost easy in comparison.
Thanks for sharing! |

Thank you Greg for pointing that out about the cats. I just spoke with the wonderful folks at Hemo Pet and they have actually confirmed that the blood used is not used on cats.
That cats have their own specific blood types that requires testing and typing prior to donation and they do provide those services.
They also wanted us to point out that not all Greyhounds can be universal donors and that its through a screening process that they determine which ones are able to provide this important service.
Thanks again for picking up on that little detail!

And here I was, bragging to anyone who would listen, that ALL greyhounds are universal donors. I stand corrected. This forum is a wonderful source of information. Thanks Admin. I guess that makes Hunter all the more special to us for his unique, semi-exclusive blood- type. Any way you slice it, the dogs at Hemo Pet are saving a lot of lives. |
