California is the third state to make smoking in a car with minors present a punishable offense. I'm curious.... is this a good idea, or an invasion of privacy? Thoughts?

I think it's a good idea. I am a smoker and this is strange, but if I am smoking in a car myself, it doesn't bother me, but if someone else were to light up I get insanely car sick. I never ever smoke in the car with children. I think that's terrible when I see people doing it. Or even worse, I've seen people holding an infant in one hand and a cigarette in another. Sad

I'm a former smoker and I think it is a great idea.

I'm not sure on this one. I've never smoked, however my husband used to. He and one friend of mine are the only two people who smoke(d) that were ever in my car. My hubby always cracked the window to make sure the smoke went out the window when he smoked in the car. Actually my friend who smokes won't smoke in my car because I don't smoke.

I think it is a good idea. Innocent children should not have to suffer because of an adult's nasty habit/addiction.

I am totally for it. I remember when I was little and had to ride in the car with my mom, and she would smoke. It drove me crazy and I hated it so much.

Then again, I think smoking anywhere in public or anywhere near someone who is not ok with it should be illegal. I was at a very long red light the other day with my windows up and the A/C going (Florida), and was having to inhale smoke because the ******* next to me was hanging his cancer stick out the window next to my vents. Thanks for the cancer, dude. Rolling Eyes

I was shocked when I went to Kentucky and people smoked in restaurants. Shocked You know, places where others are trying to eat. I mean, the law in Florida was passed after I was born and I do remember that people used to smoke in resturants here, but I had forgotten how awful it was! Smoking sections in resturants are such a joke- its like having a peeing section in a pool!

Ok, I am moderately off topic now, so I will stop. Razz

I'm on the fence.
Where does it stop? Not just about where you can smoke (will it be banned in your own home next?) but what about other factors....no fast food for 'fat' people/kids...no pop? Should veggie kids have to eat meat? Should kids be kept inside all day to prevent sun damage and outdoor pollution?
Those of course are all extreme, but that's sort of my point. Where will it end?
There's just too many 'what's next?' for me.

Lets also not forget that smoking while driving is just enough of a distraction to cause an accident. You have to take your hand off the wheel every now and then to tap out the ash, and you could be taking your eyes off the road to make sure the ash is falling in the appropriate place rather than on the dash or on the floor or whatever.

Plus, just because the window is cracked open doesn't mean the smoke isn't being blown to the back of the car. How many times has someone tried to throw something out the window just to have it blast right back in?

And anything related to smoking around kids is just a plain bad idea.

I think people are getting too personal about this issue, what we should really be asking is, Do we have the right to tell other people what to do?
I am a non-smoker, but I believe smokers have rights too. If we make laws to ban smoking, what's next? Is the government going to ban everything that is bad for us?

Yeah, but banning smoking isn't like banning a bad singer from singing in public. Smoking is a HEALTH issue, and if people aren't going to take care of themselves, by all means, the people around them should have good defense. I can't tell you how much is bugs me every time I have to walk past someone who's smoking or had just finished smoking. It's not an "annoyance," I literally can't breathe until I'm back in good clean air.

I understand your annoyance, but my view is that why is everybody thinking that smoking is what needs to be banned since it is so bad for you (which I do agree that it is bad for you) when there are tons of pollutants in the air already, why isn't the government doing something about that?

Probably because smoking seems easiest. Banning the pollutants from cars and factories and such would probably cause a massive problem with employees and money and such. You wouldn't get the same problem (not on the same scale, anyway) if you made a rule that people have to smoke outside or in their backyards or in a special smoking-only room at a restaurant.

I completely agree, smoking is probably the easiest to ban.

I just think we should find ways to respect the rights of everyone instead of respecting the rights of only one group. This is still America, land of the free, right?

I think it's a good idea. Not only because of kids. Smoking's a big distraction for drivers. And a lot of smokers just throw their butts out the window, sometimes not even putting them out.

I remember smoking sections in restaurants, I hated walking through them. They passed the no smoking in any public building law here a while ago, over 10 years ago, I think.

Your "rights" end when they infringe upon the rights of others.
