 I don't understand quite why, but the Ruffus Rescue shelter in Atlanta, Georgia will not let me adopt a half white german shepherd, half husky, dog named Spirit. She's pretty much exactly what I want in a dog right now, and I'm a responsible, caring, animal lover that would take great care of her, but they will not let me adopt her because I live in Texas, and they say they do not adopt out of state because "I am sorry but we don't adopte out of state as we like our dogs to come visit after they are adopted." Ruffus Rescue. And I don't understand. I think its unfair that this should be the only reason that I cannot adopt Spirit. If the reason they need to see her is because they need follow up visits to be sure she is doing well, I am fine with taking her back whenever they need to see her. If anyone can please help me to adopt Spirit, please do. Even if its just an email to the organization, or some information you could give me, it would help so much. Thank you everyone!

I hate to say it, but there are many groups who will not adopt out of state. This can be for many reasons - they want to do a home check, want to be able to do follow up visits (in home or not), want to insure that the dog will be returned to them in the event that things don't work out (as it does happen), etc. Regardless of their reason(s), you're not likely to change their policy. As someone who was denied an adoption (due to the living situation at the time), I can give you a few things you can do - check with kill shelters (I'm sure TX has many and GA does have some that will adopt out of state - check out the Rescue and Urgent boards here on PF) as their policies are generally less stringent and check the PF classified ads. There may be another dog out there who needs you in one of those places.

Cloudchaser, I'm sorry that you were denied, but I can see the rescue's point. Shipping dogs far away means that they can't check up on the welfare of the dog personally. I wouldn't adopt a dog that far away either. On the plus side, there are TONS of great dogs right there in Texas!!! You can probably even locate a mix that is similar to what Spirit is. I'd suggest heading down to your local shelter and meeting some of the great and worthy dogs that are there.

| thats the thing.. there's not.. I've looked. I've been to several shelters, and i cannot find a dog i like.. i've searched on petfinder.com too, and there's a few in texas, but it seems that the dog i want just isn't common at all here.. |

Most rescue groups and shelters will also not adopt to anyone under 21, so that may have played into it also. Would you be adopting, or your parents? If this is going to be your dog, please consider carefully what your living situation may be like in 2 years, 4 years, 6 years down the road -- possibly quite different than it is now...so think long and hard about whether this would be fair to any animal you adopt.

hi cloudchaser and welcome to PF! I'm sorry the rescue will not adopt out of states. many rescues feel this way, they wouldnt be able to take the dog back if the family the dog was adopted to ever needed to be rehomed and most rescues have a policy requiring adopters to return the dog to them if the need to rehome comes up. I myself have that policy for my foster dogs! I would cry if any of the dogs ive fostered ended up in an animal shelter! There are sooooo many dogs in texas that needs home. a poster here named melinda actually fosters dogs in texas. Have you checked surrounding shelters and rescues like in houston and dallas? I'm sure they would adopt out of their area to find a dog a home. Maybe you could tell us what your looking for in a dog and we can help you search? dont give up there are so many perfect dogs looking for new homes.  |

Hi and welcome! go to your local shelters or rescues in your area and go to the shelter and rescue and get to know the dogs. maybe you could volunteer for awhile. there are plenty out there needing homes and you will find the right one soon.  just keep looking!

I didn't vote, because I've been denied a few times, but I don't quite call it "I was denied my right to adopt". I rather call it "the rescue exercising the rescue's right to choose who they see fit".
I hope you find a right dog soon. |

Literally, hundreds of thousands of dogs are euthanized every year in Texas. Texas shelters are overflowing, we have one of the worst over population problems in the whole US. San Antonio, Houston and Dallas are operating over-crowded facilities who euthanize almost immediately because there is simply no room. GSD mixes and Husky mixes are a dime a dozen, they are extremely common dogs. I can walk into the Animal Control in my city at any given time and find GSD's and Huskies, pure and mixed. You need to continue to go to shelters, frequently, to see what they have. Do not rely upon the computer, you need to go in person, a couple of times a week. You can ask to be put on notification lists so that if a certain breed or mix comes in, they can notify you. You can get preapproved through foster based rescues so that they can keep an eye out for the type of dog you are looking for.
Only irresponsible rescues and shelters would ship an animal to another state, and having strangers from a forum email a shelter to get to them to change their (very common) policy isnt going to change their minds. There are solid reasons why it isnt a good idea to ship a dog, home checks and health certificates for traveling over state lines being two of them.
Good luck, and remember that adoption isnt an instant gratification process. It can take quite a while to find the right dog. And also, keep in mind, that the perfect dog for you might not necessarily be a certain mix. If you get too hung up in wanting certain physical characteristics, you will pass up some amazing animals.
Oh, and by the way, adopting an animal isnt a "right", as your poll stated. It's a privledge. |

| I honestly think it's not the best idea to adopt a dog that you've never met. You don't know from a picture and somebody else's description whether you would even really like this dog once it got to you. But besides that, the people with the dog need to meet you, talk to you, and make sure that you and your living situation are a good match for their dog. And if something ever happened to you and you needed to return the dog, since you're so far away, they have no way of making sure that would happen. I would keep going to shelters and seeing what they have. There are a lot of dogs listed online, but I think it's probably the most inefficient way of finding the right dog for yourself. |

Are you looking specifically for a GSD mix or Husky mix? Or is it the personality that caught your attention?
I don't know what area of TX you are in, but in my area (south) Huskies are not a common breed. When my friends family wanted a PB Husky, they had to travel 3 hours to the nearest BYB that they could find. I waited 3 months for a litter of Husky mixed pups to come in, and thats because I visited several shelters every weekend. GSDs on the other hand, you can find them in every shelter.
Take your time, have patience, and just keep looking. I was considered lucky to get my girl, but I also made sure to go in to look at the pets first thing in the morning right when the shelter opened. |

That's really odd. They are extremely common here, pure and mixed. There are always multiple BYB ads in the paper, and I see them in the shelters every time I go because they are dumped so often, and also tend to be escape artists. I dont care for the breed much, but a year or so ago I had a gorgeous little solid white, blue eyed purebred pup that I fostered. |

PULL FEE HAS BEEN PAID!!
There is a spayed female white german shepherd who just was surrendered at the Murfreesboro, TN PAWS shelter.
She is 14 yrs old. Because of her age, she will be euthed today unless sombody can rescue her.
I don't have photos but am told by a German Shepherd savy volunteer that she is the real deal.
Her pull fee would be $48 since she'd need a HW test and rabies vaccination.
Can anybody get her out TODAY, 10/3?
Better work fast on this one. I am not kidding...
