|
|
| So my parents hometown is looking into banning Pits. The other day a mentally retarded kid came to my parents house with a petition to ban Pits. My Dad told the kid no. Would you have folded to the pressure of having to say no to this poor kid? I personally think that it is dirty and underhanded to send this kid out. My Mom asked him some questions about the breed (while he was petting their pit mix) and he was really confused and obviously sent out by some horrid parent for the sympathy signature. |

| That's sick. I work with special needs kids on an almost daily basis, and to use them for something they may not even understand is really sick! |

It certainly could be a sick attempt to exploit their child's handicap for their own agenda.
OR, it could be a loving attempt to "mainstream" their handicapped child. In other words, an attempt to help him feel as normal and as valuable as any other child.
Would you have felt the same way if it had been a non-handicapped child? If not, you might need to ask yourself why you see "a mentally retarded kid" rather than just "a kid".
It's sad when people jump to conclusions about other people's motives without knowing ALL the facts. I see that a LOT on this forum. |

i would not fold.
maya, she said her mom asked him questions about it and he seemed confused.. mentally retarded or not, no one should be sent around trying to convince people to sign something if they don't understand it themselves. If the child had some answers and seemed educated on the subject it would make more sense, but if you are sending your mentally disabled child around who doesn't understand, it is i think most likely just in hopes someone might feel sorry for him and "fold".
same thing if it were a non- mentally disabled child, just being all cute trying to convince people to sign it without knowing what he is talking about.
you know, some people buy girl scout cookies cause the darn girls are so cute, not cause they want cookies (I WANT the cookies!!!) and they feel bad turning down a sweet child |

I don't disagree with that. I wouldn't say it's wrong to do it, if that's the approach they think will work, but I think it would be more effective to have someone who can educate other people about WHY they should support the effort (whatever it is).

This is what I have a problem with. Jumping to conclusions that the parents are "horrid" for doing this. Again, maybe they are and maybe they aren't. I would be more inclined to believe the parents love their child and just want him to feel as normal as possible.
Where were the parents? If he was truly mentally retarded, and they weren't with him (or at least where they could keep an eye on him), I would be much more concerned about his physical safety than whether or not they were "using" him to get signatures on a petition. |

Maya, the parents were no where to be seen. I told Mom she should have called the cops! The kid was about 8 years old and totally unprepared for the task. He was not a neighborhood kid unless he just moved in. Mom talked to him a little and when he asked about her dog, she told him that Coop was a pit mix and he did not shy away. The child was not scared of the big bad pit and I hope he went home and told his parents about the wonderful dog he met.
Brie, I am very well, thank you! I will start a new thread with some pics! We had a cancer scare with hubby, but it looks as tho things are good. I have been so busy trying to improve my riding skills that I have not been around.
Kristina, darn it, now I want cookies too!!!! |

No!! and I think it is lousy of the parents to put their child in this position. They are trying to change dog laws based on pity for their child. _________________ www.happily.petfinder.org

| I did not vote, but I truly do not know what I would do....If I had a ton of time, I would probably explain to him why I won't, but if I was in a ruash I just might fold. I stink at saying no to kids and animals. It is like if someone sent a bunny to my house to sell new cars....I would probably end up with a new car LOL |

| IMO no child should be allowed to go door-to door by themselves regardless of their age or mental level. |

LOK:
I agree.
Things were different back when I was a kid, and I'd usually go with a friend, or a friends parents, if not my parents when doing anything door to door (hello girl scouts.) I hated doing that.
There was creeps out there then, and there seems to be more of them nowadays. I dislike solicitation of ANY kind really peeves me off.
One of my dd's former schools would do a lot of door to door selling or raising money etc, my dd always wanted to do it, and got REALLY upset that I wouldn't take her around to harass our neighbors, I asked her why and her response was "our teacher told us we HAVE to do it, we'll be in trouble if we don't! She'll be disappointed!"
I was totally shocked. She was only about 5 or 6 at that time, so upset over her teachers words that she was crying. |

I agree with LOK as well. Children have no place going door-to-door by themselves at whatever age. Most adults wouldn't feel safe doing so! Add in the age & handicap of the kid in question...
If I were presented with that situation, I would have asked the kid to walk with me to the parents (you've gotta assume that the child was walking from/to whatever location the parents were at) so I could not only tell them how I disagreed with the choice they made in allowing the child to go door to door soliciting signatures AND how I stood on the whole BSL BS. (Of which I've a specifically formed & researched opinion)
I understand wanting to mainstream special needs kids - a more suitable situation for this to occur would be to stand WITH the child near a public space such as a grocery store, etc. |

No, I wouldnt fold. It wouldnt make a difference to me if the kid was mentally disabled. I would of course be nice, and very politely tell him "thank you, but I dont agree with the petition".
And then I would close the door and wonder what kind parents would let (or make) him go door to door promoting something he probably dosent even understand. |

I would not fold....no.
As for the safety. I do not think it's safe for any human being, child or adult, to go door to door to strangers houses. Not now, and not 30 years ago. Your 8 year old riding his bike on the side street is one thing. Walking up to strangers houses is quite another and not safe at all! _________________
