I live in a rich county, so this may not work in your area.

Our county shelter has pictures of dogs at the pound needing homes come up in rotation on the county information channel on cable.

I like the Mingle with Mutts theme. Plan a spring party with that theme.

Another local pound has the county dog park located so that park users actually park in the pound's lot. Yep, I have made the short trip across the parking lot to look at dogs. It is only by narrow chance that I didn't adopt there too.

Dog rescue is like the old man saving starfish on the beach story. Can't same 'em all, but you can make a difference

This sounds like a wonderful idea! One of my first suggestions would be to post to other animal groups like google or yahoo pet groups. You may find some of those people in your area that may be able to help you. Some may be from shelters or a local newspapter or an animal training facility.

You might want to consider planning this for a community festival. That way the promoters of the festival will help defray some of the costs.

Some other things to consider:

-- Contacting local veterinary offices, pet stores, training facilities, pet behaviorists, grocery stores, banks, etc for donated items to be given away as raffle items or along the lines of a chinese auction.

-- You could have other companies lined up to provide information to attendees. Ex; A dog groomer to show owners the proper way to trim their dogs' nails, a trainer to show people how to teach their pets basic commands.

-- Stores could donate food and/or drink to be provided or sold to attendees.

Well, that's all my brain has now.
