Post subject: ideas/resources etc for starting a shelter
Reply with quote

Hello all. Looking for ideas, direction, resources.
My husband and I currently caretake a ranch and will buy property soon. We would like to start an animal shelter in our county. We would like to build a pet friendly facility with a residence so we could live there. We are hoping to buy some land soon regardless but don't know the specifics as far as starting a non-profit if we own the land versus if we buy the land as that non-profit. Are there resources out there that would loan money to non-profits to buy land....build facilities....any help appreciated.

We live in a small rural county where the abandonde pet problem is heartbreaking. The vet will keep them 3 days then they are put down. We keep adopting but living on someone elses land makes it hard to really set up a working foster/shelter situation. Would hate to spend $$ to build facilities there as the situation could change at any time. We plan on working with shelters inlarger areas to assist with placement. Much better if we owned the land. Oh what a dream.....I can envision it now.

Thanks!

First of all, you should have at least 2 years experience in ALL aspects of sheltering.

Then find out what the zoning requirements are for the property you want to buy. Check on state & local kennel licensing requirements.

Keep in mind that you can't save them all. You need to set boundries for intake & learn to say NO.

You can go to HSUS, American Humane, ASPCA web sites for information.

Don't listen to the negative remarks. Just remember that you can do it if you persevere and have the backbone to deal with a lot of hard situations. I am in the process of starting up a small group in Asheville, NC. It started out as one dog, then two, etc. Now I have big aspirations to have a "real" rescue and am also looking for land for the future. I would suggest meeting with your local animal control and see about laws, rules, regulations. If you wanted to chat more you can email me directly at RNVET@aol.com I looked at the Best Friends website as suggested below and it looks as if all of the classes are full. I also know that Pasado's in WA offers a similiar course.

Where did you see negative remarks? I only see good advice, links, and well wishes.
