this has been a fairly longtime pet peeve of mine.
why is everything offering an alternate menu in spanish now? why does everyone have to take extra steps to decide?
we don't have german or chinese or japanese or french or any number of a number of other languages offered. it's spanish and i want to know why.
french language is the *worlds* largest spoken language, so if we were to offer and alternate language, shouldn't this be the one?
shouldn't spanish people have to learn american english too?
while i can see being true to your heritage or whatever other BS you want to call it, i know many italians that are multi-language capable, as well as other nationalities... didn't *everyones* ancestors have to learn english at some point when they came over on the boat? (i have indian ancestors and i know they aren't speaking much sioux right now either.) wasn't this a requirement for citizenship at one point?
so i ask WTF?
comments.......
(i hope i'm not coming across as biased, bigotted, prejudiced or any other thing, i'm really not, i just don't agree with this issue.) |

i started a thread on what peoples opinions were on people speaking other languages in our country etc etc awhile ago, so weve already gone over this.
anyways, it does not bother me, because in no way shape or form is it affecting my life, or harming me, so i dont see why it should annoy me. i think that should go for everyone else. |

| Well, actually I've seen Chinese in Chinese neighborhood, Korean in Korean neighborhood, and some other languages I don't really know on ATM's. I don't mind if there is another language offered, but I wish they would just let me go ahead in English without having to choose. |

if they *do* decide to remove 11 million illegal immigrants, it might not be any more.
this is twisted humor and not meant to be snide.
actually i wonder if there's ever been a poll to prove this.
when i was growing up you chose a language to learn, now i'm told my friends kids were *told* that they're learning spanish in school, and that's it.
this disturbs me on many levels, eventually i will have children too.
this still also doesn't address the problem of why spanish speaking immigrants or whatever they are being called don't have to learn english.

I do understand why and I'll be happy to share it with you.
My grandmothers is Hispanic and even though she was born and raised in America, Spanish is her primary language. She speaks perfect English but its easier for her to understand complex ideas more efficiently in Spanish. English is my primary language, though I speak and understand Spanish to an extent that most would consider fluent, I know personally that even though I know Spanish fairly well, I understand things far more quickly in English. Ya Dig?

Of course it would be. There are multimillions of legal Mexicans in America.

| Sure, have the other option be Spanish. Here in Canada, it's French. |

didn't *everyones* grandparents go thru this upon immigration tho?
why is spanish so different?
in a way, and not to be cruel or insulting this is making spanish people as a whole sound "mentally challenged", altho i *do* understand your point.
i have lots of italian friends parents, grandparents and ancestors who have the same basic problem. so maybe there should be menus for italian and other languages immigrants bring in with them too?
(actually italian is somewhat close to spanish in its basics, so the converting comprehension problem would have to be *very* similar.)
once again, this is just for debates sake and really not meant to be insulting........ |

for some reason i seem to recall people used to be proud to learn english, especially immigrants.
outside of the united states english in some form is spoken because it *is* the universal business language believe it or not. business is very often transacted in english. |

They can program it so that English as the default and let people choose another option. |

It has nothing to do with learning English. It has to do with your primary language and what language you feel most comfortable doing business in. Again, my grandmother speaks FLUENT English yet feels more comfortable doing things in the language she feels most comfortable with. If an ATM offers that, good for them.

spanish speaking people? spanish descendants? it seemed pretty politically correct to me. mexico and other places were colonized by spaniards as i recall, altho there were some spanish in the united states itself.......
if i said indian people it would be alot easier than listing individual indian nations, like lakota, sioux, blackfoot...... in new york state there was at least a dozen different tribes alone, the largest being the seneca nation. seneca, cayuga, onieda, onadaga and mohawk, not to mention hurons and various others. |
