I'm in my second year of spanish. I don't use it except when I'm in class. It's fun to say random things to my friends though, especially since they don't know what I'm talking about.
Oh, the spanish thread would be fun Kutin! |

i can still vaguely understand Spanish. (I last took it in my sophomore year.... passed the state test and then stopped). When people ask me if I know Spanish, I reply with "un poquito" I started in 7th grade.
Luckily most jobs I've had have someone who is fluent and will help me if need be.
I agree that the younger kids are, the better they pick it up. That is why my mother's school teaches it in kindergarten. And I think shows like Dora are helping too.
MY boss's son had a Cuban nanny when he was a kid (he's a senior in HS) now. He learned Spanish very young, and he's fluent because of this. |

I didn't respond to the poll.
Graduated in 1993 (along with the Saved By the Bell and Beverly Hills 90210 crew!).
Studied Spanish for 2 years.
I know enough to pick out a few words, and know if somebody is talking about me. I could eat and find lodging if for some reason I was stuck in a Spanish speaking country.
I do not use it on a regular basis at all.
Oh, and I know one fun sentence in French : Voulez vouz coupe le fromage avec moi? (probably brutally misspelled, but y'all get the point..)

God, would it ever! I would love to be fluent in at least two languages. If it had been taught to me as a child it would have been as easy to learn as breathing! I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to do that if it would be so easy to learn as a child.
Anyway, what about languages in college? I was only required to take one year of a foreign language in high school when I was 15. It was French. I remember nothing.
I took Spanish in college, two years of it, because it was a much more beneficial language to learn, given the rising hispanic population. If I had somehow kept up with it, I could probably have much better job than I have now. Employers here are scrambling to find people who can communicate in Spanish that are also college educated.
The classes were hard, but at the same time I loved it in many ways. At the time I could read and write it pretty well, understand it spoken to me well, but me repying out loud in Spanish was quite difficult.
My doctor at the time (he's now retired) was a US born man, but quite well traveled and also multi-lingual. When I'd go in to see him for checkups he'd speak to me entirely in Spanish once he learned I was taking it in school, and I'd reply in English. I'm a geek, but it was fun!

ok...I started French classes in kindergarten. I took it all the way through highschool. So basically I should now how to speak it.
Unfortunately, the french that is taught versus the french that is spoken by french canadians is very different.
I can watch tv and read in french and understand the bulk of it. But to speak it with a french person? no way no hel. |

I loved language so I took Spanish, French and Latin in High School - I still get to use the Spanish. My son married a spanish speaking girl in January (he he - I am now the MIL) so I really get to use it (well, more spanglish than anything). Also, my son, who never wanted anything to do with language (probably because I did) now speaks Spanish - I love it!! I really wish I had a chance to use it more. I am really rusty. (1977)
In college I took Spanish, Russian, a little German and old church slavic. I rarely use any of the other ones but am glad I did it. I will never be fluent but loved having the chance to learn some of them. (1984) _________________

not really. Have you ever tried to converse with a Northern Quebecois? Or a Manitoban who is french?
Very, VERY different dialects, accents and words. |

I think it's that way for many people who learn a foreign language in school. It's normal.
I think what would fix that is some sort of immersion. Where you are forced to practice speaking it. I think it would "click" pretty shortly. _________________ Marti

Yes, and have not had any problems. Just seems odd.

I took french in high school and can't even count anymore.
'95 grad
In middle school we did basics of French, Spanish and German.
You don't use it- you lose it.
I wanted to take spanish as it would have come in handy, but my last name began with a Z so I got stuck with French.
I wish they has sign language as an option. I have a computer program to teach me sign language, but I'm not motivated enough to do it. The deaf people in my family read lips, so I get the easy way out! |

I do want to speak French though. I loved the way Mirovingian in the Matrix 2 and 3 cursed in French and said it's like wiping your **insert another word for butt here** with silk and it really sounded good... |
