Very curious as to why you lump tea in with sodas and kool-aid? Tea is loaded with anti-oxidants, it's been proven in study after study to be a very healthful drink.

I lump them together mainly because of the sugar content. Maybe its just me but I limit the sugar intake in my house.

In the south, tea is often loaded with lots of sugar.

I'm extremely familiar with traditional southern iced tea. Wink But that's not the way we make it at our house. And when we go out to eat, the waiters and waitresses are always shocked when my young kids ask for unsweetened iced tea. Laughing

They say food preferences are formed really early - i.e. you will develop preferences from the diet you eat as a very young child. I do not think in light of the research into childhood nutrition now and the problems many are experiencing, that I would give a young child junk food. Especially since if you don't give a toddler junk food, they really won't ask for it. There's just no reason to do it IMO. Once they are older and start going to parties, it can get harder. I agree it was mean for the mom at the party to just say "no" but it is hardly child abuse. It would have been better if she explain beforehand in simple terms that some people like to eat different things but our family doesn't, because it's not very good for you. I wouldn't serve junk food at the party for little kids either, out of respect for the parents. Like others have said, there are plenty of healthy treats out there. You can even make cake type things with healthier recipes that include fruit. Once kids are older, like teenagers, they should be able to make their own food choices, because obviously they are growing up and will have responsibility for it at some point. But with little kids, although occasional treats won't kill them, I think they should be fairly healthy with at least some nutritional value to encourage good food habits, like a sugar cookie can be topped with a little sliced banana or strawberries for example.
