Post subject: Pets Left Behind (Katrina)

If any disaster relief persons are in the area, we were unable to get to our home in BAY ST. LOUIS, MS. Our Cockatoo was in the home and our 14-yr-old Iguana was in a cage in the garage. If our home didn't make it... we would very much like to know if either of our pets were found as "strays". Our home address is 109 RANCH ST.... assuming there is some sort of way you might be able to identify the home, or the street. Please respond to this posting if you 1)have passed along this request to a representative of the HSUS, Nat'l Guard, or other group in the BSL area or 2)have info regarding the bird rescue and/or reptile rescue organization that would most likely acquire our pets during a rescue operation. And 3)If you were forced to evacuate from Katrina and was unable to bring your pets, feel free to post info regarding your loved ones.

Hello;

I'm sorry your pets weren't able to evacuate with you and now you are worried about them.

Please e-mail hurricane@bestfriends.org and give them the following information: Your name, a current contact phone number or friends and family contact information, names and descriptions of your pets, address of where the pets where left and photos of the pets if possible. They will then pass this on to animal rescue groups in the area and try to find your pets!

Best of Luck to you and may God hold your family in his arms and protect you as you try to rebuild your lifes!

Nancy

Have forwarded to EARS for you.

EARS leaders are now staging in Jackson, MS and Houston, TX to assess the situation and determine next steps. UAN is coordinating response efforts with several other organizations that are providing animal disaster relief - including the ASPCA, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Colorado-based Code 3 Associates, the Humane Society of the United States, American Humane and Best Friends Animal Society. On Saturday morning, responders from these organizations will meet to determine a plan of action for entering the Southern portion of the state. Initial plans for EARS to enter the New Orleans area to assist with animal evacuations have been put on hold due to increasing violence and lack of supplies across Louisiana.

UAN has alerted all of our 2,300 trained EARS volunteers that we may need their help, and already more than 1,100 people are willing and able to respond when EARS is deployed. As of this time, we are not mobilizing the deployment of volunteers, but that could change in the near future. It is still very early in this effort and we will only send volunteers in once it is safe to deploy, which may very well be later next week or beyond.

Please keep checking this Action Report for more details. If you are an EARS volunteer and have not yet informed us of your availability and skills, please do so now by clicking the appropriate link below in the "Contacts" section. We will be using information gathered through this process to mobilize volunteers.

SHELTER INFORMATION:
We are maintaining a downloadable/printable list of all temporary animal shelters that we hear about in the affected areas. If you become aware of any shelters that are accepting animals, please forward the information to info@uan.org. Download the current information [here].

REPORTING LOST ANIMALS:
We are collecting rescue requests from evacuees and others who are unsure of the whereabouts of their animals. Those requests are daily being compiled with requests reported to other organizations with whom we are coordinating to form a master database. Once teams are deployed, these requests will be forwarded to those in the area who can perform rescue efforts. If you need to report a lost animal, please send your name, number, e-mail, the # and species of animal, location of animal (address plus directions and landmarks), and permission to enter to headquarters@ears.org.

PET LOSS SUPPORT HOTLINE:
We know that so many people are struggling to cope with the unknown status of their animals and ultimately mourning their deaths. If you or someone you know need to talk with someone, please call the Pet Loss Support Hotline run by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The toll-free number is (800) 565-1526 and there are people to answer the line between Monday through Friday, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm PST. The school is hoping to get extra help over the next few weeks to staff the hotline, who will be instructed on dealing with victims of disasters.

I met with the family this afternoon. It's a Cockatiel (not a cockatoo). I had accessed the SunHerald.com and looked through the blogs.. downloaded and printed quite a few of them for the BSL-evac'd family to read. One of the blog messages pointed to NOAA.org so I went there and downloaded the 350 aerial images of BSL, unZIPped them, compared the 60+ images between various Google maps (www.google.com >> more>> maps, and turn on the "hybrid" feature) and with online city maps of BSL. I think I got fairly close to the home and printed some of the hi-rez images. The home may still be fairly intact. I drove to their daughter's home (where they are staying for a while). Even THEY had a difficult time trying to find their home in the images. The dog that they were able to bring with them is an elderly 8-9 yr old Irish Setter or very red Golden and it was obviously stressed and having difficulty with the hot weather. I do hope one or both of the other animals will be rescued, especially as I'm afraid the dog may not live too much longer..
Thank you all. Please continue to pass along this information. I am pleased that, as of tonight, 300 people have viewed this topic. I hope you all continue to add info that may help them find their pets.

SPCA help for animals
Friday, 9:50 p.m.

There's hope for stranded pets in the New Orleans area.
The Louisiana SPCA, New Orleans' animal control agency,
has begun rescuing pets from owners houses.

Louisiana SPCA director Laura Maloney said shelter workers
follow other agencies and crews through neighborhoods and
rescue pets, some that are locked in houses.
At the owners' request, "we break in," she said.

Owners have to call or email the operation and give their name
and address and information about where the pet is confined.

The hotline number is: 1-225-578-6111.
E-mail should be sent to
Katrinaanimalrescue@yahoo.com.

The hotline already is in effect, Maloney said. "It's busy an awful lot.
We are trying to get a bank of telephones"
