Post subject: I want to be a trainer

I have been working with dogs for years.

I have worked in pet shops, animal hospitals and currently I work for a daycare business for dogs.

I want to become a trainer and have been desperately seeking a mentor to work with in helping me achieve my goal. So far Ive had no luck.

I would love to work as an assistant just to gain experience. If you can help me in anyway it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

First of all the places you have listed aren't going give you much exposure to the kinds of dogs that need training. Matter of fact not much exposure to much of anything unfortunately.

Before you think about training you should get some experience in handling & learning to read all sorts of dogs. Also some knowledge about health, good quality food, various training methods & tools. I would suggest volunteering at your local shelter, HS or AC facility. Also spend a lot of time on here reading everything.

I guess you have tried any local trainers, perhaps widen your search to nearby towns.

Looking for a mentor is a great idea! Looks like you have wonderful background experience! Here's my first steps:

Locate a few professional dog trainers in area (paper, yellow pages, online or visit a few dog parks and ask them on any known dog trainers)and ask if they are needing any assistance. I beleive everyone has a different style of trianing and many different methods that work so the more trainers you are able to assist will make you very valuable in time. Dont just restrict yourself to one form of training (obidence) expand yourself to a few hunting and trial run trainers too! The more you expand yourself to helping these different trainers the more you will create a network.

PETsMART offers a wonderful training program for people interested in becoming dog trainers. The best part is that it's paid training. I would go down to your area PETsMART and see if they're hiring dog trainers.
