Post subject: dog afraid of clicker training
Reply with quote

my little papillon is 5 years old and she is scared of the clicker. Everytime i click it, she gets nervous and scared. she puts her tail betweeen her legs and hides under the bed. i learned that it is better to clicker train her but i can't because of that problem. i know how to clicker train her but it doesn't work on her and she stops and just stays really still and stares at me.

please help me solve this problem because she doesn't listen when i use my voice. Sad

A few things to try --

Use a ballpoint pen that clicks. Makes a very similar noise to the clicker, but it's a little softer/quieter.

Try putting some tape over the clicker to muffle it.

Try putting the clicker in your pocket to muffle it.

If she just doesn't like the clicker noise, try saying "yes" (or whatever word you choose) in an upbeat, enthusiastic voice. Treat afterwards just as you would with the clicker.

Are you treating her with "super treats" every time you click? The dog needs to be conditioned to associate click with treat. This means simply clicking and immediately treating over and over. Once the dog is conditioned, training with the clicker can begin.

As for treats, be sure they are "high value." There are things you would do for five thousand dollars that you wouldn't do for five bucks, right? The same principle holds for dogs... Wink

Good luck!

Nancy
