| Ah. Well, like I said, why not type your Zip Code, or Town and State into the search bar on the main page, and just select 'Dog', no more specifics? You'll see ALL the dogs in your area, and maybe one will catch your eye. Then, if you want, you can refine your search. |

ok, i'm basically positive it's going to be a Dachshund. I went a Dachshund race yesterday and it was so cute! and my neighbor has two dachshunds. does anyone know of a good breeder in California?

well for me, a whole bunch of people and books have told me that it's better to get a dog from a breeder, because then they're usually healthy, they've had all they're shots and stuff like that. and i don't really care how much she is. if it's over a thousand then i would probubly care. the dog i have right now was $600. I'm just looking for a good breeder right now. |

It's fine if you want to find a GOOD breeder (do you know what to look for, by the way?), but I think it's only fair that you realize that what others have been telling you isn't necessarily true. First and foremost, a dog from a breeder will NOT have all of its shots. A puppy needs to visit a vet every four weeks for bosters and worming. If you get an eight week old pup, that means about four vet visits until it is up to date and altered.
In addition, pups take a lot longer to housetrain than adults, in my experience. And while you may have the ability to choose a housetrained dog from a rescue, you will NOT have that option with a puppy. In addition, pups need TONS of socialization! TONS!!!! As I have learned, even socializing a pup does not always ensure it will be well-behaved with new people or new situations when it is mature. With an adult dog, you already know the dog's temperment.
Also, getting a dog from a good breeder usually takes some time; you have to be on waiting lists, do adoption questionarres, wait for the pup to grow old enough to leave its mother, etc. A good breeder will usually have a waiting list before the pups are ever whelped, so you're looking at a good three months waiting from a GOOD breeder. Although a rescue does have adoption procedures it will follow, the process doesn't take nearly as long as buying from a GOOD breeder.
Last but not least, EVERY line has some genetic problems. There is no exception to this rule. So, while you may know that the parents haven't contacted anything, or that nothing has cropped in the line yet, how do you know your pup won't be the one to have thyroid, or luxating patellas? There is a risk no matter what dog you take- whether a rescue or a breeder's pup.
So, by going with a GOOD breeder, you will wait longer, pay more, have to spend a lot more in vet bills for puppy shots, and have to work much harder at training.
The last thing I'm going to add is this: there are 161 dauchshunds listed on petfinder in California. If you are only wanting the dog as a companion, why not choose to save one of these dogs already in need of a home?
If you still don't want to adopt, at least ask some questions on the board about how to locate a GOOD breeder; most people have a lot to learn about what qualifies as good and what doesn't. Good luck!!! |

| How about you try looking on petfinder first. You'll probably find a really lovely dog and you won't have to take all of the trouble to find a good breeder. |

Delete Hopper aka Hopper D. Kisser, and what a nice kisser he is!! Hopper is a neutered male, akc pure breed dachshund, six years old. Hopper’s mother has a baby who is quite ill & they had to move in with some relatives who it seems did not like animals which left poor Hopper with no place to go. Hopper is just the sweetest, wiggly tailed boy you ever did see! He loves to cuddle in your lap & watch TV or sleep under the covers with you. He will bring you his food bowl when he is hungry & barks when he needs to go outside. If you prefer to crate him at night or while you are away, that is fine with him as long as you put a blanket over his crate to make it den like, so he can curl up & sleep until you return. He loves to eat & could stand to loose a few pounds (couldn’t we all). He is very playful & gets along with cats & dogs. Hopper is UTD on shots. If you are interested in adopting Hopper you must be within a one & one half hour radius of Kingston, NY & be willing to fill out an application, sign an adoption contract & have a home visit. The suggested donation for Hopper is $150.00. Hopper is brown & black (Wild Boar color). Photos available! Rescues need not apply.

Delete Purebred Dachshund - red/brown color. Extremely intelligent, responds to voice sentences ("Do you want to go outside?") and such. Laid back, lovable, cuddly, loves to sleep in my bed and tunnel under the covers. A joy to have as a pet. Has usual Dachshund tenacity at play. Gets along with children, other dogs, OK with poultry...but does not like cats. Prefer adoptee home not have cats (high chasing potential). Has been vetted and had his teeth cleaned. Funny happy little dog. I cant keep him because I have 8 cats and I didnt know of his "cat-aversion" until after I brought him home. I wish I COULD keep him -he is a wonderful little dog!...except for the no-cat thing. I love him and want him to find a nice happy warm cat-less home.

A Dachshund is NOT a small dog.
Please do not equate pounds with the category of "small dog". Small dogs are usually thought of as companion animals, lap dogs, fun little active fuzzballs that go quietly to sleep with their mommies.
Not.
Dachshunds were bred to hunt and kill very ferocious critters. They are tenacious beyond words and vocal to beat the band. Dachshunds LOVE to hear their own voices, so it is not a matter of training them to be quiet as a part of regular training. Training a Doxie to "not speak" takes away part of the joy that IS a Doxie.
Dachshunds are difficult to housebreak and KEEP housebroken. It isn't always a done deal. Dachshunds don't view housebreaking as "important" to them.
Please, before you even consider the whole adopting versus buying argument...first consider whether the pet is even a match for you. Seeing one at an event and thinking "they are adorable" is not a lifestyle evaluation. |

My family has dachshunds. They are wonderful dogs. BUT...they are NOT a breed that you should be looking to adopt if you haven't done a lot of research. We have been lucky with our girls. They are 11 years old. They are calm, super affectionate, love to lay around and snuggle, etc. They are very loyal and love their humans. They are as different as night and day, though. Cats is right...they are barkers!
One LOVES walks and rides in the car...the other hates them.
One adores playing with toys...the other has no interest.
One takes fairly well to new people and children...the other DOES NOT.
One of the most important things to remember is that dachshunds have issues unique to their breed...such as being prone to back trouble. I have to remind my son to not let the doxie that loves to play jump up and down off of the couch a lot while they are playing. She's not built for that, and could do serious damage. We have also had kidney stone issues...which makes for accidents in the house. Dachshunds need their rear end glands cleaned on a very regular basis. Dachshunds can be incredibly protective of their people and territory. This isn't always a good thing.
I love dachshunds...absolutely adore the breed. They are more than just cute, though. They take work.
And please...save a life...ADOPT!!! |

As compared to:
| CatsRus wrote: | | Please do not equate pounds with the category of "small dog". Small dogs are usually thought of as companion animals, lap dogs, fun little active fuzzballs that go quietly to sleep with their mommies. |
or what Scurtis said.
Small dogs are often thought of as anything under "x" pounds, regardless of what their needs are or their challenges or what the family situation is like. Anyone who says they are JUST looking for small and includes Doxie in the list is probably not considering their particular challenges.
A Doxie bark is louder, pound for pound, than any of our GSD or large breeds. They also LIKE to talk, so it isn't a matter of training them to have manners, you are training them to remove an aspect of life that they truly enjoy. Much like training a herding dog to not herd.
If a person were to say they wanted a nice 45# sized dog for their one room apartment and included Border Collie, Aussie and ACD, I would just as quickly point out that they may be "medium" sized, but they are truly LARGE in needs often.
Choosing a pet should involve more than weight. It can start there, but if it ends there, it often doesn't work out. |

Okay, skipping over the picky arguments, now....
It's good, definately, that you've been doing your research, and the books aren't far from the truth - going to a GOOD breeder can be a wonderful experience in getting your new pooch!
However, to get a puppy from a GOOD breeder, you'll probably be put on a long waiting list - GOOD breeders only breed their dogs once or, max, twice a year. If I were you, I'd do some Puppy Mill research.
I'd also opt to look in rescues on petfinder's search bar, or the ones listed for you - many of these dogs are already temperment tested, so you can find one that's perfect for your home. Also, you might find yourself falling in love with a doxie mix, or not even anything doxie when you start looking! |
