Hello I'm from the K-9 Service Club in Franklin In. Were are upset that the Johnson County Commissioners won't let us help out at the animal shelter. All we do is give baths and help raise money and do good deeds not do anything wrong. - (k9serviceclub)

To: Johnson County Commissioners
1. On November 15th the Johnson County Commissioners decided to move the age of volunteerism up to age 18 and over.
2. The K-9 Service Club of Franklin Community High School, consisting of sixty students, only four will be able to participate because of this decision; despite the fact that they and their parents and or guardians have signed the Franklin Community School Corporation's waiver and release, the Johnson County's release of liability, and the Franklin Community High School's permission slip.
3. Hundreds of students at this time are volunteering throughout Johnson County's animal service clubs. These clubs in the past year have raised more than $10.000 for the Johnson County Animal Shelter. Along with collecting; cleaning supplies, collars, leashes, food, and grooming supplies. They also have hosted adoption drives, microchip drives, and spay and neuter drives in order to keep the stray population down.

We request that:
That the Johnson County Commissioners reconsider their decision to raise the volunteer age, and further consider lowering the approved age to 14 with signed parental consent, 11-13 with adult supervision and singed parental consent.-(that is on out petition)

So if you would like to sign go to http://k9serviceclub.org/ ans click the sign button and it will tell you the rest.

E-mail me at princessgrlk08@msn.com if you have any question or need more help or some anything nice. Please reply saying that you signed. Thanks again.

Sincerly,

K-9 Service Club

I think it's a shame that they aren't letting you kids help out there anymore. To me, I think it makes you all appreciate your animals more seeing them in these situations at those shelters. Not to mention the proper way to care for these animals. There are never enough volunteers. Maybe if they don't change their decision to let you guys go back in there and volunteer, you can contact rescues in your area instead. Raise the money for them. Go in there and help walk and bath and everything else that goes along with it. Maybe take that back to your class and see what they say!!!! Good Luck!!!!

Sadly, it may be completely out of the control of the organization.

When I volunteered at a brick/mortar facility, the age to volunteer was 18. Kids under 12 could not even go into the shelter area with parents.

The reason? Insurance. The insurance company sets the parameters for providing coverage for the group.

So maybe before you go forward on this, you should make a call and find out about WHY the stipulation and IF it is related to insurance, there might not be an option. It would be a shame to petition and attack the organization if they had no choices.

Thanks for your votes. We have paper in Jonhcon County that people only in Jonhson Contry people can only sign. We have over 300 right now and more comeing that is on the first week of this. Tell everyone you know to vote on the site.

They raise th age to 18 because we were trying to get it lowered. Thats why they did it. No insurence or nothing just to make us mad. Kinda like if you wnat it lower and we don't want to do it I will higher it. So that's that.-k9 servioce club

You are assuming and I can understand why you might, but wouldn't it be worthwhile to just check it out? If they are a corporation or public entity, you can attend a board meeting and ask.

Thats ridiculos! kids should be encouraged to help with the community. Around where I live any kid can help at the shelters. I see often girl scouts and other organizations helping in the shelter, when i see this I am happy that kids can be taught to volunteer at such a young age.

Well, I guess if someone told you that, it must be true.
But if you are trying to encourage them to take a chance on young people - is this the best statement to make?

"Are the Johnson County Commissioners being stupied?"

Maybe name calling isn't a way to advance your cause for recognition of your maturity and ability to help. I know you are probably frustrated, but maybe consider that perception?

most of the time, if a rule is changed or a new rule created,
it is because something happened.

believe me in this day and age people do not have the time or
desire to start creating new rules or adjusting/changing old rules
just because they are bored.

something happened.

i think it is great that you want to help and that you are upset that
they will not let you. that shows a lot about how much you care.

and that you have gone so far as to start a petition about it.
good for you. your family must be very proud of you.

that being said, let me say again, something happened.
they did not just out of the blue change the age just because.

maybe they are not telling you why the change, but i can just
about guarantee you that there must be a reason for it.

so, my suggestion is that you have one of your parents or some
adult call and ask them why they changed the age to 18.

they may or may not tell them. but there is a better chance of it.

then if you know the reason behind the change, you might be able
to address that.

but if it is serious enough that they changed the age to the legal
adult age, chances are, they won't be changing it back.

BUT .... it is worth a try. so go for it.

just do yourself a favor and have an adult call to see if they can
find out what the reason is behind the change so you can change
your strategy in how to go about getting them to change the
age back to what it was, or at least lower it from 18.

good luck and if this doesn't work out, don't give up, just find
a place that will let you help.

you are doing a wonderful thing.
what a good person you are.
Very Happy
