A Lesson Plan: It is within our capability to share and teach appreciation, compassion, joy, patience, and respect by bringing more humane education into the classroom. We can change the laws to punish animal cruelty, but we must also act to prevent cruelty:

Many years ago I did humane education with a rescue group. I had a 20 pound cat, Patches, who loved to visit with the students and get attention. If a student walked Patch around the room, Patch had to be petted as a thank you. It's amazing how many kids who were afraid or leery of animals couldn't wait to walk him.

My other cat was Beauty who would go with me to classes with handicapped kids. She loved and understood them, even waiting for the teacher to show how to pet her.

However, I think one of the best cases was a student telling me about a very senior dog with tumors who needed to be rescued. After some negotiation, I took her to her new home.

I agree it's very important and definitely makes a difference, but it also makes you smile proudly when you see the changes you've made, even with just one child or animal. You reminded me how much I enjoyed it.
