Post subject: Rest in Peace, my sweet Mace

I haven't posted on here in a very long time. However, I know there were several members here that had followed Mace's story and a couple who were involved in helping him get to me. I wanted to give an update and let everyone know what has happened.

Mace was already older when I adopted him. About 2 years ago, he started limping a bit when he would go for long walks. Last year in the fall, I took him in to the vet. X-rays showed he had very bad hips - in fact the vet's comment was that they were "shot" and that Mace was a very tough dog to still be walking. The theory is that he was born with bad hips and just never knew any different which is why it wasn't really noticeable until they became really bad. I was going to have an FHO done - however, due to Mace's age (approximately 12 y/o) and the severity of the damage to his hips - it was decided not to do the surgery. We started him on a pain medication regimen and he responded quite well to that.

About 5 months ago, he started to have an increase in trouble walking. The vet added another medication and it helped for a while. Mace couldn't walk long distances but I would walk him around my yard and across the street to my parents yard. He really enjoyed doing that a couple of times a day. About 3 months ago he started having accidents - when he would try to stand up, his abdominal muscles were pushing on his poor bladder and he would pee. I bought a couple of Belly Bands and those worked great for him.

However, after that point, he really started to deteriorate. This past weekend, he got so that he couldn't stand up on his own and he was completely incontinent. I made the decision to take him to the vet on Monday night and he fell asleep with me hugging him.

I was fortunate to be able to share my life with him for 5 years - it would have been 6 years in January. Rest in peace, my handsome boy.

Oh my, LL, terribly sorry to hear this news. Mace was PF legend, you know Laughing

Such a mess when you pulled him but with your love and care he just blossomed. I always though of the saying "diamond in the rough" when I thought of him. Such a dear and so loved.

Sending you a big hug. So sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry that you lost Mace.

Some of them take hold of our hearts in a big way.

I hope that the good memories help soften the pain of losing him.

I am also one of Mace's longtime admirers, and so sad to read of his passing.
You were such a good fit together, and it always brightened my day to see Mace pictures. Such a sweet gentle love.
