|
|
Hello,
I am trying to decide whether or not adopting a small dog. I am prone to adopt a pet with short fur as it may be easier to groom. I am prone to adopt a 'Rat Terrier' or a 'Jack Russell'.
My question is aimed to understand what those of you who have a pet and a job all the while living in an apartment do to keep your dog happy. |

Hi!
It is so good that you are doing some research and taking your time before adopting!
There are many small dogs that can live happily in apartments, and even be trained to use a litter box while you are at work! However, I don't think that the two breeds you have mentioned would be ideal candidates.):
Both of these, and in particular the Jack Russel, are very high energy dogs who, despite their small size, needs lot of exercise and room to run.
Just a thought! |

I agree, do your research.
I don't think most terriers would do well in an apartment unless they get a ton of exercise. You may want to consider an older (two years or older) chihuahua or a lower energy dog.
Another option would be to find a local rescue group to foster for in order to see if you can find a dog that works with your schedule and living situation. Of course, I would only suggest doing so with a small breed dog.
Good luck, keep us posted. |

Thank you very much for your replies.
I know terriers are demanding in terms of exercise, and I harbored some reserves about it.
I believe I cannot afford --in terms of maintenance-- a longed fur dog, or anything above the 20lbs. In fact, I travel at times, and I wish to have my dog travel with me. I know there are toy sized terriers (Rat Terrier mostly), but again, I most likely will be faced with a high-energy animal.
Chihuahuas look like a nice choice.
Does any of you ever owned or know something about Pinschers?
My main goal is to adopt a dog and have my pet feel as much as possible in his natural element. |
