I wasnt sure where to put this topic, I hope here is fine
I found a dog in a rescue. I just fell in love with him and willing to do anything it takes to adopt him. Heres the story
I found him on here Petfinder, I am in NJ and the dog is in a rescue called Forever Home Rehabilitation Center in NC. Its less then 8 hrs away of a drive. I put in an application, after a week of no responses, they messaged me back saying they didnt want to adopt him far away. I tried searching for another dog, but i couldnt find another dog like him. So after a few weeks I emailed them asking them to reconsider my application. I even told them a little about myself, that I'm highly experienced with the dog's breed, I have a lot of space to provide (both inside my home and outside), and offered to provide pictures and that I work at a pet store and know a lot about pet nutrition etc etc.
So they email me back and said that they'd be willing to adopt him to me and asked for my phone # and told me they would call me tomorrow. Its been a week and a half, I have tried contacting them but they dont answer me.
I dont understand why a rescue would tell me they would adopt to me then turn around and not respond to any of my messages. Maybe I'm being a little over confident but I dont see why I wouldnt be a good match for this dog. The dog is a border collie, Im very experienced with the breed, I have a lot of property, I'm knowledgeable with nutrition and dog toys good for the breed. I dont understand why someone wouldnt adopt a dog to me. But mostly I dont understand why someone would do this, why give someone false hope like that. I try looking for other dogs, but I still have my heart set on that one.
If you were in my position, what would you do? Do you have any suggestion or have dealt with this rescue before? Any possible help would be appreciated. Like I said Im willing to do anything to adopt this dog
thank you |

I would ask a local NJ rescue/shelter to step forward on your behalf. They can do a home check, reference check, vet check and so forth. The easier you can make it for the NC rescue the more appealing it may be.
Do you have a transport plan in place?
What if you meet the dog in person and it is not love at first sight. This does happen and then the dog is dumped at a local shelter. Something a transporting rescue never wants to see happen. A good rescue group considers this dog their responsibilty for life. They are at a loss and so far away if this adoption goes wrong. A good rescue always puts the dogs well being first.
The simple answer to your question of why a rescue may not be anxious to get involved in this type of adoption is time. To some extent, taking the time to adopt this one dog, long distance to you, may take the same time as adopting out ten locally.
I would not be alarmed that the rescue does not get back to you in a timely manner, ideally doing so would be wonderful. But realistically in rescue, your day never turns out as planned.
A long distance rescue/adoption.....is complicated. |

That's a good idea I can ask my local shelter since I've already adopted from them. I didn't even think of that. If they ever get in contact with me, or I get in contact with them ill suggest that.
As for transportation, I offered to drive down myself to get him. Id like to visit and play withy him anyway so they can see if we're a good match for each other. I looked up the directions to the rescue, and the drive there is pretty simple considering its less then 8 hrs. I even offered to return him there personally if things didn't work out for some reason, or send him to a rescue specific to his breed (If that's what they'd prefer). But its unlikely, id rather live with a pet that didn't work out for me then send him away knowing there's a possibility he maybe put down.
But anyway if they did call I was going to make suggestions on how I can make the long distance adoption any easier for them and see what they had in mind. Because adopting long distance can be stressful and a lot involved, I want them to feel comfortable with adopting him to me. I was going to drive down, leave the night before and stay at a hotel then go see them, spend the day with the dog then drive him home (I would have someone come with me to help with the driving)
I know that this is a big ordeal for them and I hope that I can make adopting long distance more comforting. I just home they can contact me soon, I've been feeling discouraged, and it doesn't help that my friends and coworkers have been giving negative opinions on it |
