I personally don't believe holding a certain type of job should entitle anyone to unearned respect. Respect must be earned and kept, it's not automatically conferred when someone gets hired, promoted or elected.
I rarely discuss politics.
If someone, including a relative, starts a political discussion I do not want to be part of, I will either leave the room or go to another part of the room.
If that is not an option, I will make it very clear I am not paying 1 iota of attention to the conversation or flat-out tell the person I do not discuss politics and am not interested in listening to what the person has to say.
I do not care if it is construed as being rude, it is frankly the only way to be able to be around certain family members and has proven effective with co-workers, friends, relatives and complete strangers.
Frankly, the right to be disrespectful of elected officials is a freedom to be coveted. We don't have to worry about being jailed, beaten or murdered for speaking against the president, vice president, mayor, governor, etc. like citizens of other nations. _________________ Want to know what I have been up to?
