My daughter turned 18 three days ago. Today we called her doctors office to ask a question about something as she had mono over winter break and still feels off. The office told us today "we can't talk to you. She is an adult" Shocked

Earlier in the day, my other daughter (age 17) was at an appointment for a potential new therapist. They always ask who lives in the home. When told her sister lives there they asked her age. Then asked if she is single or married. Shocked

When did this happen??

I know exactly what you mean. My youngest turns 13 tomorrow, the middle one got his license a couple of weeks ago and the oldest just finished her first semester of college. My daughter is dealing with some issues right now and has had to face the fact that she needs to handle things like making appointments for herself. She is no longer a child. It's kind of hard for both of us.

Yep....as hard as it seems, your daughter is now a legal adult!! Shocked Rolling Eyes I have dealt with the same thing as far as Doctor appointments, followups, or whatever......I have no legal right to her medical records anymore.......They need to speak to HER only!!!!! It is frustrating because my daughter is still very.....um.......irresponsible Rolling Eyes Embarassed .....so I am constantly on her behind to follow up with stuff....... Mad

I know what you mean....my daughter isn't always the most responsible in the world, but she has tons on her mind right now too. I mean, she's actually more responsible than most her age but she absolutely hates talking on the phone and won't make calls. She used to make her sister call for her when she wanted to order a pizza!

My 17 year old is actually mentally ill (it bothers me to use that term), so I don't know how this is going to work next year when she is 18. I mean, she's not mentally ill to the point that she is unable to do anything but it does hamper her maturity level. She is not going to be ready for adulthood next year.

It bothered me that even though I was paying for my child's college tuition, I had no rights when it came to finding out his grades because at 18 they are considered an adult.

I understand that! Though I have no money to pay for her college tuition....
But I guess the point is, if a parent does pay for the college tution it is because they are choosing to pay the tuition of another adults education. But they still can't legally give you access to that "adults" records.

Mog the Dog here.

Do you claim this adult child as a dependent on your federal taxes? If so, you do have access to your adult child's education records without his/her prior consent. See section 34 CFR ยง 99.31(a)8 of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) for verification of your legal rights.

Mog, you are one smart little stuffed dog!

My stuffed animals can't even read The Cat In The Hat. (Believe me, I've tried, but they just get distracted and wander off.....)
