Post subject: Germany anyone?

Sometime in 2012, I'll be heading off to Germany for a few years as my next duty station. Has anyone been? If so, any real cool things I should check out while I'm there? Also, where would a good starting point be in terms finding a shelter to volunteer for? I don't know how things work in Europe as far as animal rescue goes.
It was a tough decision when choosing, I'll be even farther away from home, farther from my pets, and longer away as well, for I reenlisted for two years atop what I have left. But I figured I'd never get another chance to explore Europe (I'm not exactly rich or know anyone rich Smile ). I'm pretty sure I've dissapointed a few of my family members, my mom wants me out of the military ASAP, and everyone wanted me to move to a base closer to home, I've done neither.
Anyways, I'm always up for an adventure, so I'm looking forward to traveling around Europe discoving really neat things.

I haven't been to Germany, so I can't give any recommendations. My friends have loved traveling in Germany. I am very jealous! Have fun and make the most of your time in Europe!

On a totally unrelated topic - when you are older and are looking into insurance be sure to look into USAA. (I my car got broken into recently, so this is fresh in my mind!) My dad has been with them for decades and he has always had good experiences with them, and as a dependent I was able to join with them and I have only had good experiences with them as well. They also do not breed discriminate with their home owners insurance!

How exciting for you to being able to travel.

I am from Switzerland and know German. There are lots of shelters and rescues in Germany, even though the pet overpopulation isn't as big of a problem as it is in the States. Other countries in Europe have lots of feral and strays and many are brought to Germany to find new homes. When you know where you are going to be stationed let me know and I can find shelters or rescues that need volunteers.

Berlin is full of history and you should definitely go see the Berlin Wall (or what's left of it), Munich is beautiful as well (including the Oktober Fest). If you have a few days off go to the Schwarzwald, which is a beautiful part of the country.
