|
|
Hi I work with an animal rescue group without a physical shelter. We use about 15 foster homes to help animals in our area. We provide food to our foster families for pets in our organization. Does anyone have any advice on where we can get large quantities of food for cats/dogs. We have a place to store it but we can't afford to buy off the shelf. It would be great if there was some programs or grants we could apply for.
Science Diet has a great one if you have a physical shelter but we didn't qualify so we are hoping to find something that matches our group's profile. |

Have you tried contacting local pet stores? The group I used to be with gets food and supplies donated by PetCo. _________________ Want to know what I have been up to? Visit my website!

| Our nearest pet store is about an hour away but it is worth asking about. Thanks! |

| A lot of rescues will get free food, treats and toys from the stores they do adoption days for. I know an hour away is a long trip but you might be able to get free food and some dogs adopted at the same time. |

| Walmart and possibly grocery stores will sometimes give away broken or short dated bags of food. |

| Target and Sam's Club will donate broken food bags, too. The key here is to develop a good working relationship with the store manager. |

If you have a good relationship with one of the shelters you could see about partnering with them. The rescue I used to be with just had a food shortage crisis, partnered with a humane society in the state, gave the humane society the money and they bought the food at 35-cents per pound. _________________ Want to know what I have been up to? I would go along with the other's advice and suggest contacting big retail stores, such as vons, albertsons, walmart, target, k-mart and such. I'm sure you could develop a relationship with them to get food. Also I'm sure they could use the donation as a tax write-off, so i dont see how it would hurt them really to donate.

| Pet food makers often donate mislabeled, out of date or otherwise perfectly fine unsalable food. You could also contact your county shelter and see whether they have suggestions. After all, you are taking some of their work load and in my town at least they are always more than willing to help us volunteers. |
