Post subject: I need advice @ feral cats

I am a dog person who does not know a lot about cats. I saw two cats searching in the dumpster behind my local grocery store. I felt sorry for them, so I have been leaving two cans of cat food + water everyday for nearly three months now. They scamper away when I am near, but I notice as soon as I leave they go right for the food. It is getting to be difficult to feed them everyday (I always try to get there at the same time everyday). I also want to catch them and have them spayed or neutered---but I can't do that until my work slows down in a month. Anyway, my question is--if I do catch them and have them spayed, should I release them back behind the grocery store, or should I take them to my backyard. I cannot let them in my house because I have FOUR dogs, plus I assume the cats are feral--though I guess they could be strays but I doubt it. I have a lot of birds in my backyard, and I don't want to a cat to kill any birds. However, if they were in my backyard, it would be easier to feed them everyday. What should I do?

Catching them and placing them in your backyard more than likely Swon't work if they are true feral cats. They'll go back to their colony, where ever that is. I'm assuming close to where you are currently feeding them. If you can't keep them then catching them and having them S/N then releasing them back would be the best bet. Is there anyone else around that can feed them on the days you can't? Someone who can help you maintain the colony if there is one?
