Dog wrapped in chain falls from truck
May 17th, 2011 8:14 pm ET
Greenville, SC - On Sunday morning, a dog was dodging traffic on Sulphur Springs Road after falling out of the back of a truck. The driver of the truck never stopped to retrieve the dog - he was left to fend for himself.
The dog had a heavy chain wrapped around his chest and neck - and a skin condition that seems to indicate that he did not have a good life prior to his bounce from the back of the pick-up.
The dog, now known as "Red", was taken to the Greenville County Animal Control for care. Workers there confirm that Red is suffering from a neglected skin condition - and he was covered in ticks when he initially came in.
Despite the heavy chains, the toss from the back of a truck, and an un-treated skin condition, the Greenville Sheriff's Office is not conducting an animal cruelty investigation - something that has those familiar with this case up in arms.
Now, Red's supporters have created a Facebook page for the homeless dog - you can access the page at this link.
Red's supporters are asking concerned individuals to make a phone call to the sheriff - to ask why an investigation is not underway.
Perhaps even more concerning - there is rumor that Red's owner could even step forward and reclaim him - a concept that seems unbelievable considering how Red came to be in the care of the animal control facility.
Anyone hoping to speak up for Red - to request an investigation - can do so by contacting the Greenville County Sheriff at 4 McGee Street, Greenville, SC 29601. Phone number: (864) 467-5300.
As for Red, right now he appears to be enjoying the compassionate attention that he is receiving - enjoying perhaps the first bath that he has ever had.
Hopefully Red's owner won't try to reclaim him and he can be put up for adoption, or be transferred to a rescue organization that can help direct him to a loving new home.
