Post subject: Coon's Journey

It has always been against my nature to ask for help, but here I go. I began this journey with my 12 year old cat Coon in January 2010 when I took him in for a regular yearly check-up and vaccinations. About two weeks after that visit, I noticed a small lump on his side. After taking him to a second veterinarian for a second opinion, x-rays and a biopsy, the diagnosis that every pet owner dreads hearing fell on my ears-cancer, specifically Vaccine Associated Sarcoma. We were then referred to an oncology specialty veterinarian hospital here in South Carolina where we endured CT scans, ultrasounds and chemotherapy, carrying him in every two weeks for his treatments. Prior to January he was the perfect picture of health! At his chemo treament two weeks ago, the oncologist noted that the lump had stopped shrinking and had in fact grown. She said it was now time to try radiation. Throughout all of this, Coon (I feel because he was in such good health going into this) has been a trouper! We are now in Cary, North Carolina at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas receiving radiation treatment. I have to date spent approximatly $8,000 and have many more thousands to go before we are through with radiation. As if this is all not enough to endure, Coon's cancer diagnosis came on February 15 just four days before my 12 year old son underwent a mastoidectomy (cranial surgery) to remove a large colesteotomy. Coon and Ethan are best buddies and are the same age. We want to give every opportunity to Coon to have a quality life with Ethan, however short that may be. There is so much unknown in this journey, but one principle remains clear - we are responsible for the pet members of our family and they depend on us to care for them. There is such a bond between my son and my Coon that I must try whatever it takes to give him a chance at life, but funds are dwindling. My request of this forum is to please point me in the direction of some financial assistant. Just in case you are wondering is this all ligitimate, my account # at VSH is 59539. Any help, however small is sincerely appreciated. If there is a way to post pictures I would love for you to see my handsome Coon. If you took the time to read this, thank you. Please pray for my Coon.

Here's the update on my precious Coon. He is home from the Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Cary, NC. We made a five-hour drive up there to get him and then turned around and made the five-hour trip back - ten hours in the car!! He received 2 radiation treatments and 1 chemo treatment in addition to several CT scans, and is weak and not eating at this point. I believe prayer works; so those who are praying PLEASE KEEP PRAYING!! I will keep you posted and will attempt to upload pictures of him.

Just wanted to let you all know that my precious Coon passed on July 5. He was the epitome of strength and courage to the end. The lessons he taught us for the 12 years we had him, and especially the moments we shared together the last several months, are forever in our hearts.

And this is why we love our pets....they love us, they teach us, they steal our hearts, they make us laugh, they make us cry, they comfort us, they heal us, and the list goes on and on and on.....!
