We adopted Sheltsie last January from the Williamson County Humane Society up in Georgetown, Tx after my husband saw her on Petfinder. We thought she was mostly deaf and quite a bit blind because she didn't react to much of anything, so we renamed her Keller. (Turns out, she's only a tiny bit hard of hearing and she can see just fine!)
After about three months with us, she started showing interest in her surroundings and our other dog, Tippy. We aren't sure why it took so long, but then we don't know what lead her previous owners to leave her at the pound right before Christmas, either. We also don't know who trained her to shake paws, or how they could discard her so easily.
Fast forward to today - she has learned it's ok to sleep on the bed with us. She's learned to come running when I whistle for her (something *I* had to learn). She's learned to play with Tippy and with us. She's learned to let us know when she needs to go out, and if we're not around to use the pads we leave down. She doesn't run away when you make a sudden movement anymore, either.
Keller will be 16 in April and she's very healthy for her age, despite being heart worms positive (maybe why her people ditched her?). We have her on preventive which keeps any new adults heart worms from forming, and she's doing very well. She sleeps probably about 18 hours a day, but she's happy .
We took her with us on our big road trip this year and she was as happy as any dog you ever saw at all the new smells and sights. I think she had more fun than Tippy did, and that's saying a lot.
Here she is about two weeks after we adopted her. She spent most of the first three month we had her curled up just like this:
Here she is in September 09 at the Grand Canyon:
And camping in Montana:
She's currently curled up on her dog bed, snoring away. We might not have a lot of time with her, but we're making the very best of it and she gets to be a real dog for a change! |

Thank you for adopting her and I completely understand why you did! What a sweetheart!
If more people would look at the seniors, more people would fall in love. We may not have them as long but the time we have them is just as special.
She looks like she's doing great |

I remember Sheltsie! Bless you, and hugs to you for posting her update. I've wondered for a long time if she had survived physically and emotionally. (I sent you a PM but I think it was in my outbox so long that I think I finally deleted it.)
Gosh, I'm so happy for her! And she looks well loved and just as beautiful as ever. She's so blessed to have been adopted by just the right people. Thanks for saving her and loving her like she should have been all along.
Keller, sweetie, I'm so happy that you're happy.
(Tippy, you're a real cutie.) |
