| Hello, I have recently adopted a wonderful Rottweiler from Rottrescue (wonderful people)! My sister in law is looking to adopt a Saint Bernard for her husband who has been wanting this breed for quite some time. She would like to do this for his Christmas because while she was serving in Iraq, he was home taking care of her 3 teenage boys and cat. Instead of getting the Saint Bernard that he wanted he bought her a --I have a Potty Mouth-- for her homecoming. Piper is a friendly little gal and will get along with her new pal. So they are looking for a young trainable or previously trained Saint Bernard and will have a puppy professionally trained if they are lucky enough to find one, Must get along with dog and cat and teenagers. She gave me the task of helping her find their new family member before christmas!! Help! |

What part of Ohio are they looking in?
As far as adoption fees, shelters will be cheaper than rescues, which they choose to go with depends on them.
With a shelter dog, it will probably be heartworm tested, current on shots, and fixed, but that's usually it, so it will still need heartworm and flea prevention, a fecal test and exam, and treatment for any number of things that shows (common things are giardia, worms, ear infections, flea dermatitis, bladdar infection, and dentals). Coming from a reputable rescue, the adoption fee will be higher, but the dog will be fully vetted, needing nothing additional done.
Coming from a shelter, knowledge about the dog will be very limited. They should be able to cat test it for you, but how a dog reacts to anything in a shelter, versus in real life can vary. Adopting from a reputable rescue, the dog will have been at an indoor foster home, it's temperament and training levels will be assessed, and usually at the very least, the dog will be housetrained.
With a saint bernard, temperament wise, they're typically laid back, adaptable dogs that get along well with people and other animals, and they housetrain easily, but as for health, rarely have I ever seen a totally healthy saint come directly out of a shelter.
Being part of giant breed rescue, when looking on petfinder, don't just search "saint bernard" look through all of the large and x-large dogs listed in the desired area. We frequently see saint and high mixes mislabled as great pyrenees or mastiff mixes.
Also, keep in mind, with giant breeds, shelters frequently get the age wrong. We're frequently told someone has a year old pyre, but it's actually 5-6 months, or a 3 month old, that's 6-7 weeks. People just aren't used to the size, so they think they're older than they are.
Here's a few younger saints I've found:
Beautiful 4-5 month old in shelter, adoption fee is $125

Here's one listed, no age or pics, but you never know, $100 adoption fee

2 year old smooth coat. No adoption fee listed, and has cherry eyes, but if they're fixed at the same time she's spayed, it's a simple procedure, so usually not that expensive

This boy looks young, he's so gangly still, I doubt he's much more than a year

Here's a beautiful boy, also no age listed, but totally trained

This girl is precious, 2 year old, $325 adoption fee, good with other animals, kids, and trained

One year old boy, looks like a smooth coat, adoption fees vary

This girl is a mix (I think with mastiff), but she's stunning and fabulous, trained and $150 adoption fee. Doesn't get much better than that.

This saint rescue has two beautiful, young females. It looks like their adoption fee is in the $350-$400 range, but in reality, for a fully vetted saint, that's not a bad deal

This rescue also has two young females, one a smooth coat (not "flat coat" as they call it, lol). Adoption fees $275-$300

| Wow, you're a great help!!! I found a couple of these guys on here but the information you have given me is so helpful. She came over yesterday and we looked at all her options and was able to narrow down what she is looking for. Smooth coat and probably no older than 3 years. We are from the Akron area but are willing to travel a couple hours if needed. I sent an email to the shelter about Elvis, he looks like a handsome boy and she fell in love with him at first sight but have not heard anything back yet. I am going to check out the links that you have posted as well. Again thanks so much for the help, and yah I think she wants to get him from a shelter since she already has an established vet and will take him there anyway whether he's been vetted or not. |
