Hi, my name's Jami.
I came to Petfinder because I'm looking to adopt a dog. I lost my sweet little Audrey Rose back in February. She was 16 years old. My cousin Eddie had given her to me from a litter of pups his dog, Belle, had. She was a pure bred American Cocker Spaniel.
I miss her viciously. My vet, Dr. Pasco, says there's some animals that are pets and you love them, but there's others that are soul mates and Audrey was my soul mate. We bonded the instant we laid eyes on one another.
In fact, here's a picture of our first night together -
And here's one of the things she did that always confounded me. Please note that she's got a perfectly good bed behind her -
And yet where did she prefer to take her nap -
Of course there were other places she liked to sleep such as on my shoe -
In a box where I used to keep my underwear before we remodeled the house -
And of course on the bed -
She was the best little dog. Never howled when I sang. If I was on key she'd sit on my feet so I couldn't move. If I was off key she'd sit in the corner of the room giving me a pained look. She was terrific for when I had to practice for a performance.
Course near the end of her life she was deaf, blind, and had Alzheimers, but she was still my baby even if she did have to take pills to remember to potty outside.
Anyway, I can't live dogless. I know I can't replace her, but I have room to love another dog. After all, Audrey didn't replace my first dog, Bitty, whom also lived to be 16. (Bitty was a cockapoo-terrier mix.)
I live with my parents. My mom is legally handicapped after major back surgery but still can walk some. She just needs a wheelchair for things like Disneyland, the mall, etc. We live in Orange County. My father is a research chemist who specializes in finding ways to make fuels more environmentally safe while being cost effective. My career is singing - though I don't get paid most of the time, I sing a lot for charities or for nursing homes, I specialize in music ranging from the big band to disco eras plus some Broadway musical numbers. My job to pay my share of the bills is I work in a library. However I hope to one day make a decent living sing. I'm always putting in auditions for various talent shows and reality shows. As I always put it "I want to be famous enough that singers I look up to like Barry Manilow and Michael Crawford know my name and maybe want to sing with me. Not so famous that the paparazzi actually care who I am!"
We recently remodeled our house and don't have a yard yet, but will eventually. We just thought we'd start the looking process now.
I love all dogs - though pit bulls scare me. One got into our house and tried to attack Audrey and mom whom was holding Audrey at the time. I had to fight him and get him and another dog out. I'm lucky I didn't get bit by either one.
Since the house is remodeled though mom has ground rules for the dog. It has to be a female dog of small to medium size. (Audrey at her heaviest weighed just under 25 pounds.) And she must have fur, not hair. Which means we're mostly looking for cockers or poodles or mix breeds with fur.
As I always put it "I want whatever dog God has in mind for me." Though admittedly I'd love to have "The All American Mutt." Since mom wants a fur bearing dog she would have to be a dog that has breeds like poodle and cocker dominate. But since I also absolutely adore beagles and golden retrievers I would love to have a pinch of each in there too. (Though I must admit ever since I was a really small child I wanted a poodle very badly. I think it was all the cartoons that showed them as these snooty little fluffballs that some male mutt would chase after and eventually win the heart of.)
It's kind of too bad that Petfinder searches by breed rather then letting you specificy hair or fur. That would mean I could get a lot more results in one search.
Of course I'm strictly looking around the Orange County, California area. As much as I want a dog I can't see going all the way out to New York or Georgia for one. Especially if I take the time to go there only to find out the dog does not like me.
I have my heart set on rescuing a dog. A lot of people are trying to talk me out of it, saying that I'll "get a dog with serious emotional problems" and all this crud. They want me to buy a puppy from a backyard breeder or a pet store. I keep telling them, "Shelters have puppies too and anyway you can get a dog with serious problems from those as well. Probably more so!" They won't listen. *sighs* But most people are encouraging me in my search to find a dog who needs me as much as I need her.
She won't be Audrey, but you can be sure any dog I get will be well loved and spoiled rotten!
Just like Audrey was.
I miss my little baby. *sighs*
I am willing to go as far as Los Angeles or Palm Springs for a dog. Just not halfway across the US. Cause I don't have enough money to do that and I've got to meet the dog and make sure that they're right for me and I'm right for them. A dog should go to the one they were born for. Actually, I suppose that's true of any pet.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! LOL |
