Should pregnant shelter dogs be spayed prior to delivery?
Yes, in the first 3 weeks of gestation.

Yes, up through 2 weeks prior to the estimated due date, as it is likely they still could not survive on their own if born prematurely at that time.

Yes, all the way through term. Allowing the unborn to come in to this world will only result in the death of urgents already born.

Maybe. It depends on the breed.

Yes, if it is professionally indicated that her health will be compromised by delivery.

UPDATE THURSDAY, 13DEC 2007, 07:30 AM CST -

This deadline for this Beebe AC plea period is over Dogs still showing in urgent status are in emergency hold only while results of inquiries are being reviewed. Updates and final outcome will be published within the next few days.

Thanks for all the support everyone on this board has lent to this plea. The dogs love you for it.

Primary contact for Beebe AC is joy@ruraldogs.org
Ygroup and cross-post recipients e-mail joy @ ruraldogs . org <---remove spaces
(formerly humane_teens @ yahoo.com)

The Beebe Municipal Shelter dogs below are now in urgent status and pending euthanization. These dogs MUST ACQUIRE A 501c3 RESCUE COMMITMENT by the agreed upon deadline of Wednesday evening, 12 December 2007. Euthanization will begin on Thursday, 13 December 2007. You will note the theme of this post is geared toward the feminine. The majority of this post's urgents are female
:-) !!!

We currently have a sufficient quantity of low cost mobile vetting slots secured for the majority of our rescue dogs. Rescues that have worked with us previously know that the local vetting in Beebe is costly. The mobile clinic is only available every two months and offers reduced cost spay/neuter, hw test and rabies shot for a fraction of normal costs incurred at Beebe's local clinic. Appointments have been secured for Tuesday, December 11. Cash payment on delivery of the dogs at the mobile clinic is necessary. If you wish to take advantage of this low cost vetting opportunity, you must make arrangements with us to have the dogs pulled out of the shelter and placed in low-cost, temporary boarding no later than Sunday night. Dogs are given a pre-surgical, light bath the day prior to surgery and are then delivered to and picked up from the clinic by our local, boarding kennel director.

Beebe Animal Control is a relatively unknown shelter in a small town north of Little Rock, Arkansas. Dogs are hidden away in a remote, wooded, older location surrounded by what used to be the city's landfill. There are a few cages and a communal yard located at this shelter. Overpopulation puts all dogs in danger -- with or without a euth date. As a matter of fact, the shelter is, quite literally, located on LANDFILL DRIVE. Dogs at Beebe AC have little, if any chance of adoption. They need your rescue help and they need it now! Currently, there is NO Web site for Beebe AC nor will their be until city policy regarding adoption is modified (in progress and yes, I am working on it).

Unless already on file, proof of 501c3 rescue is required and must be faxed in to Beebe AC no later than the evening prior to a dog's pre-scheduled pull date. The TAG to reserve and PULL process is as follows:

Step 1: E-mail Joy McManus at joy@ruraldogs.org. Please DO NOT call Horace at the shelter. He is busy enough as it is and will refer you directly back to Joy. Phone calls to ACO only slow the rescue facilitation process down and cause confusion. Horace depends on the rescue facilitation group to acquire rescue.

Step 2: Once confirmation of intent is received, instructions and additional documentation will be sent to you for faxing to ACO Horace at the City of Beebe.

Step 3: Once your 501c3 materials are received, local rescues may arrange to drive out and pull their dogs. Out of state rescues will receive pull and transport assistance, courtesy of Horace and other volunteers, to select vet/kennel facilities for dogs temporary boarding and preparatory vetting prior to transport. More information on the process and price is available by e-mailing joy@ruraldogs.org

LOCAL RESCUES - PLEASE TAKE NOTE - Direct pulls by local rescues must be pre-scheduled by Joy. In recent months, numerous individuals have bypassed protocol and attempted to pull dogs without pre-authorization and or contacted ACO by phone to attempt to expedite the process. Some were not authorized by any specific rescue, although passing themselves off as rescue. There was also a summer incident involving individuals passing themselves off as neighboring city ACOs "re-claiming" a lost dog for its "owners" after viewing it on the Petfinder post. This has caused myriad internal problems with the rescue facilitation process. As a result, ACO Horace has stipulated that he must hear speak by phone or in person to core members of OUR volunteer group before allowing ANY local rescue to pull. Please respect the fact that this new policy has been put in place to ensure the Beebe dogs are in integral hands upon release . Following protocol by e-mailing Joy rather than bypassing us with phone calls to the ACO will expedite your request to pull.

We apologize but at this time, we are unable to sponsor direct, out-of-state adoptions. We have no safety net available for our dogs in the event an adoption situation does not work out. The rural locale has caused the group's head count to significantly dwindle and hence, so have options that would be available with a more appropriate amount of assistance. If you are an individual specifically interested in adopting one of the urgent dogs below, please find a rescue local to YOUR area that will sponsor you by making a rescue commitment and facilitating the adoption.

The majority of our rescue activity is out-of-state. We are DESPERATE for sponsorship $$$ on these dogs and various costs are incurred from the time a dog is tagged for rescue and actually transported and delivered TO rescue. Beebe, AR is rurally located and part of the statistical plight of all southern dogs. Rescued dogs are usually headed out of state and require temporary boarding and vetting prior to transport. The standard and average cost of vetting and temporary boarding post-pull and pre-transport is $175+ per dog, without any "surprise" costs incurred for covering health issues. Non-profit rescues depend on your donations to make miracles happen with these dogs. To pledge a donation or learn more about how regarding how to sponsor a Beebe urgent dog, please e-mail Joy at joy@ruraldogs.org for more information!

Persephone - Black Lab X
Must Receive a Rescue Commitment by Wednesday Night, December 12, 2007.
Euthanization begins Thursday, December 13, 2007.

Persephone (per-sef-o-nee) or Sophie, for short, is roughly 1 year of age with a mixed coat of black and brown. This girl is definitely a lover and a shadower that will make a devoted family member. Gets along with all -- dogs and people alike.

Ralean - Black Lab
Must Receive a Rescue Commitment by Wednesday Night, December 12, 2007.
Euthanization begins Thursday, December 13, 2007.

Extremely playful and affectionate, possible purebred Raeleen (ray-lean) is over 1 year of age and appears to have had puppys at one time. Fixated on a feral kitten sitting outside the shelter yard, taking up a variety of typical, Lab poses.

Passel 'o Pups - Lab/Pit X
Must Receive a Rescue Commitment by Wednesday Night, December 12, 2007.
Euthanization begins Thursday, December 13, 2007.

A general mix of Yellow Lab and Pit, we have 4 boys and 3 girls closing in on 8 weeks of age. First booster received. Wormed with Strongid. Pups will not be released for travel until 10 days after the second booster is administered. BSL is in effect in Beebe. These pups can only go to rescue.

Dogs listed below this line of text have acquired rescue and are safe!

Clara - Corgi Pup
Rescue Acquired. SAFE! Thank you!

Super sweet, estimated 5-6 month old pup arrived with her VERY pregnant (about to pop) mother. Clara is currently in emergency boarding that will end on Wednesday. Compared to the size of the others at the shelter, she is simply outnumbered. She needs a major bath, grooming session and worming.

Eloise - Red Hound X. Conjunctivitis. Scaling Skin with Hair Missing. Needs Professional Medical Assessment.
Rescue Acquired. SAFE!.

Poor Eloisa is currently a mess and in need of medical care. She is an owner sign over that was delivered with scant information about her history other than she was caged or tied for the majority of her life. Obvious signs of conjunctivitis as well as scales and hair missing in some areas. Our kennel director did not immediately perceive this as Mange. She will need to be see by a vet. Topical eye ointment administered at the shelter. Shy on approach but once physical contact is made, she is very friendly. Seems to get along well with the other dogs. No age disclosed. Estimated to be at over over 3.

Deisel - Bully X
Rescue Acquired. Safe! Thank you!

I really wanted to name this guy Wilbur, as his happy face and silly ears reminds me so much of a pig! Reports are that this is a very friendly boy with a note that he is more than a little sturdy and tends to play rough (not aggressive). Our kennel director, Marsia, photographed dogs this week. She views the ears as a possible indicator of Akita. I see the characteristics of the ears and tail as similar to that of a Thai Ridgeback or possibly a cattle dog.

Deisel is an owner sign-over so has _no_ time to spare. BSL is in effect in Beebe. This dog can only go to rescue...and he is going!

Bethia - Sherpherd X
Adopted by the Mayor of Beebe.

Bethia is a big, playful and very loving girl that is already spayed. She oves to have her neck scratched but seems to prefer play time more than cuddling. She is mutually approachable and does not hesitate to greet new faces by walking over and settling at your feet. She is dog social and currently seems to enjoy Persephone's company the most.

Cross-post Reader's Note: To view up to date, accurate information on the status of these urgent dogs or if photos do not appear in your e-mail, consult the original urgency post, located at http://forums.petfinder.com/viewtopic.php?p=1484385

If you have the opportunity, please respond to the poll question at the top of this post. I would like the focus of this post to remain on the acquisition of rescue for the urgent dogs above. If you have additional opinions regarding the poll question topic, please expound on your answer at:

Thanks for all of your support!

Hi All:

I am really hoping you will help give this post a speedy jumpstart by cross-posting. There are additional dogs on the list that have not been posted for logistical reasons (assessments being done on several prior to being eligible for rescue and owner sign-over negotiations being undertaken on a local level to give numerous, additional dogs a little more time -- more on these dogs later).

The cost of vetting in Beebe, AR is not in keeping with more urban, discounted rates. Thanks to the local kennel director, we were lucky enough to secure slots with the low-cost mobile clinic for the adult dogs featured on this list but they will only be in town on Tuesday. Logistically speaking, rescues that wish to take advantage of this opportunity must contact me by Sunday night so that I can authorize pulling the dogs on Monday, giving them pre-wash/bath and prep time prior to clinic delivery on Tuesday morning.

Please support the post.

Thank you!

As of 5:30PM today, no updates. Need a little help here on this one. I hate that we will relinquish all these low-cost vet slots -- it's SO hard to get them and so much cheaper than traditional rates at the local clinic. It's a tough group of dogs -- especially at xmastime but still have to try to find them rescue.

Hopefully, people will return from weekend outings and step up!!!!!

Thank you for trying, Karen.

UPDATE 09 DEC 2007, 9:18 PM CST -

Clara has found rescue. There is STILL time to tag dogs and take advantage of the low cost, mobile, spay/neuter clinic appointments were were able to acquire, which yields savings of between 1/3 to 1/2 the regular cost of standard vetting at the local clinic in Beebe.

Please continue to support this post.

UPDATE WEDNESDAY, 12 DEC 2007, 4:27PM CST -

There are _still_ 2 adult Black Labs and 7 very young Yellow Lab / Pit X pups in DIRE NEED of IMMEDIATE rescue --all of which are scheduled for euthanization on THURSDAY. I have contacted a long list of major Lab rescues as well as reputable, all breed rescues. I believe these municipal shelter dogs are close to sunk at this point but hey, I will continue to work the post to the end -- up front and behind the scenes.

Thanks for all the support everyone on this board has lent to this plea. The dogs love you for it.
